  • IPF Fatboy Bulbs

    Gday,
I, like a lot of you guys was looking at upgrading my lights, but i wanted to mainly alter my low beam as i found them dangerously inadequate. After having a good look at what was available i finally decided on the IPF H4 Xenon "Fatboy" Super Low Beam bulbs available from ARB. I was sceptical about their supposed perfomance figures especially after trying the Phillips +50 bulbs on a previous vehicle. I have now had them in for 3 months and recently drove from Cairns to Fraser mostly at night and i am really happy with the output and increase in visibility on low beam. High beam is also better. The light is whiter and the difference was even noticed by the missus (which surprised me more than anything). The difference is really noticable when you are travelling behind another 120 series.

They cost $147 for the pair which is why i put it off for so long, and because they had not being out for long i was worried about their reliability. So far no probs.

    They are 60/80w lowbeam/ highbeam.
Claimed figures: Optical Equivalent of 150w High beam and 190w Low beam.
Just pull the standard globes out and keep for spares and put the IPF's in

Just another option if anyone is interested.

    Cheers
    Dave

    Slads,
I noticed when reading the "Changing Bulbs" thread that Grandeman also has them. Be interesting to know his opinion.

    Cheers

Those optical equivalent specs come straight from the ARB catalogue.

I was looking at the HID globes, but not legal here in OZ yet. A mate of mine is a rep for OzXenon.

As a note I adjusted my low beam which was a dismal as ! and actually find its ok now without a bulb replacement!

          Team Piggy,
I adjusted mine as well to try and get rid of that real dark patch of road on the drivers side. As you say, it did make a difference but the bulbs are better again. I thought maybe i would get high beamed by oncoming traffic, but didn't.

I find mine quite satisfactory now (adjust 3 times before happy with them).

I may still go the HID option, but its just getting around to it that takes the time!

Because HID is the ultimate! We have them in some of the lights on the Rally cars we run and once you have seen them you just wont go back!

OK you b@st@rds pushed me along. Havent had time to chase up low/Hi HID's yet, and I must admit I am a bit worried about melting the reflectors in the standard lights with HID inserts!
I bought some Fatboys today ($130) and will post some pics of the light output standard to new over the next few days.

Yeah Team Piggy, youre not wrong. $147 was for the set a mate brought me up from Mackay. Cairns ARB wanted $165 for the pair!!!! In the ARB price list catalogue the RRP is $149 a pair, so you guys done well.

What do you think Team Piggy.

I think I need to put them in, should be doing it now, but I am looking at the bed as well! need to move some other cars to get the Prado out, all too bloody hard.

I wacked mine in and took some pics last night.
Sad to say at this point I cannot see any difference in brightness/spread/penetration with the fatboys in.
Now this is in the suburbs though with street lights etc. I will report back after trying a country road at night as thats when the prado headlights suck the big one!
I took some pics against a roller door and also front on, and cannot really pick a difference between the standard and fatboys.

Yeah mate. I swapped mine at night time and only changed one side so i could compare the difference between the two. It was very noticable.

                          Cheers.

I did the same and also took decent photos the whole way along, there was a slight difference but I would rate it maybe 5% at most in brightness? How big a bitch is it to get the Passenger side in without removing the battery!

                            Toyota globe (left) vs Fatboy..

I reckon the standard lights are the only truly crap part of a Prado - but fortunately we can fix them!!

The Fatboys do run a little hot if the car is still and left on high beams for a while. Otherwise, the end result really is worth it.

Len from ARB Newcastle took care of mine.
As I recall, they were a bit of bastard to fit... but worth doing.

You wouldn't be throwing out your driving lights, but these are a substantial improvement over the standard headlights.

Now, if anyone knows of a good HID system...
