  • My dual battery installation

Here are some photos of my dual battery installation. I did the install last year but haven't got off my tail to post the pics here.

The battery tray was bolted to the steel wheel arch using one existing bolt hole and additional rivnuts. The left hand end is packed up using a 50mm x 50mm section of aluminium tube. This is bolted to the wheel arch and to the battery tray.

Here you can see the bracket I fabricated to support the air intake.

    Another shot.

Here you can see the new mounting position for the power steering hydraulic reservoir. The original bracket had it's legs cut off and a new mounting hole drilled in the corner. This is then bolted to an existing bracket further aft in the engine bay. The hydraulic hoses are long enough to accommodate this new position without any problems.

From above showing the Redarc Isolator mounted on the side of the engine bay. It is mounted using an existing bolt and an additional bolt into a rivnut I installed.

The relocated power steering hydraulic reservoir.

Some completed installation shots showing the isolator mounting.

The finished installation. The battery has since gone to god, so has another one the same. They were on the chuck out pile from one of the UPSs at work, they were kinda old. Obviously Chinese junk. I have a Yuasa installed now and it's fine.

I'm very happy with the dual battery set up, currently it runs my HF/VHF/UHF radio setup (I'm an amateur radio operator VK2AFL) and also runs my UHF CB. It will soon run my worklight/reverse light installation, and a fridge when I get one.

I have just installed a winch connected to this battery, and I've used the "override" function of the Redarc isolator to parallel the batteries together when winching, it works a treat.

Give me a shout if you would like any finer details on how it's done. It beats paying some other monkey to do the work for you.

Higher resolution images are available here.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

      Truly inspirational, Drew !

You got me thinking about what I needed to do for my own dual battery.

Here is Part 1 of my dual battery install.

There's heaps of space over in the corner ...

I wound up buying a BT64 battery tray from my local TJM bloke. It feels a lot more robust than the Supercheap tray - but it is more expensive.

Mocked up a DIY bracket to mount the Power steering reservoir securely - while keeping it out of the way of everything.

      Looks OK from this side.

Add a lick of paint and retainer plate - that makes sure the reservoir stays where it is - while bouncing around on rocks and lumps

      Another view of the bracket.

... and for those who missed it the first 2 times ... here's another shot of the bracket.

Look down here - there's still plenty of clearance - but I have added some split tubing over the rubber PS hoses - as I don't get to stick my head down here when I am driving and I don't know how much these bits move around.

Now I just have to do the wiring !

        Chippy,

That's coming along a treat! What a top job - looking forward to seeing the rest of the install as it progresses.

          Confusion reigns :? :?

I have read as many of these posts as I can fit in my head - and there seems to be a huge number of different dual battery isolators on the market.

I can get my head around the basics of the solonoid unit versus the electronically controlled unit (just) - in the way the EC unit can allow dual battery starting, dual battery power for winching etc. but I really don't know enough about what the various units do - and how they do it - to make an informed choice.

I see a lot of guys opting for the Redarc unit (Drew) and Embi has gone for the Piranha unit. Fleabay has a wide range and my local TJM bloke is recommending their DBS unit.

I would appreciate some guidance on the relative merits of what you guys reckon are the better units. If this has already been done to death on the forum - I apologise - but could you flick me the thread link please.

          Cheers
          Chippy

It's an Outback Accessories unit sold through TJM. There are two models for the 120 series Prado and the unit for the Petrol (that puts the second battery on the driver's side) is the BT 64.

                  Here Chippy..read this.! http://www.fridge-and-solar.net/dual_bat.htm
I read it awhile ago, but from memory I'm sure he recommends the Redarc solenoid. Sounds like the go to me anyway.!

                    Thanks Justo

That's a really useful read. Sounds like the Redarc is a good reliable unit and doesn't rely on a whole heap of gizmology.

It's also nice to see a decent comparison of what some parts places call battery cable and what really should be used.

                    Cheers

                        Cool vids Stan

Great way to wash the mud off - and rinse the carpets - and clean the seats - and wash all that dust out of the under dash wiring - but bugger the snorkel, I'd be getting some bigger wiper blades
