  • Second Battery Tray Damage - Warning

I had a shock last night I have been cleaning and tidying up my 120 since a recent Corrugated drive thouugh Diamantina / Plenty Highway / Simpson Desert etc. I Removed my second battery tray and to my suprise there were only two bolts out of 5 holding the other 3 had destroyed the metal where they were. May be they should be mounted on some rubber to absorb some of the shock. here are some pics....

Hey how do i put the pics on ???

I cant do the IMG thing,
If you put your pics up on a seperate photo site you can just link it.

Im with picasa, but photobucket and similar are the same.
some you can do the img thing.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

I have just found another Prado with the same Battery Tray problem he also has done Cape York and the by pass ( Corrugated Rd) back down.
These pics are from my 120 Traded in august.

worth a check if you have done a lot of klms on corrugated roads

I do not know what brand this is. I will mount it in my d4d when i get it on some rubber i thing that would help and also check it after a currugated trip.

          I hope i have helped

I reckon the stabiliser certainly helps but I went for some overkill on mine.

Everywhere that a bolt went through sheet metal I have used a large penny washer, on a bed of Sikaflex, on the other side of the sheet metal - to spread the load a little. If I had my time again I would probably go for a larger plate that picks up a couple of bolt holes and spreads the load over a larger space. I check it occasionaly - usually when I'm cleaning out a heap of mud - and haven't noticed any damage (yet). If I do it will be in with the larger plate.

            Cheers

Biggest issue I can see with this design are:

It has had no rubber packing under it.
The tab that is attached to the side wall of the engine bay has nothing to take the weight, so it gets pure shock load 100% of the time!
(Some others have a packer (alloy) and a bolt under the base of the tray to add support).
The battery clamp also puts full weight onto the tray, so if the tray is not mounted correctly and substantially it offer a lot of leverage when hitting bumps to rip the tray screws out.

I would highly suggest Rubber matting, redesign the clamps, and support the base of the back of the tray.

It is a early Piranha tray, they didn't come with the top support bracket.
