  • Finally lifted... with Lovell's

3 months from finance dept approval to install

I went with Lovell's Springs all round... Medium duty in the front and HD in the back (putting cargo barrier, half sided draws and possibly 2nd battery in the back soon. As well as towing a 2T boat when we get it... hence the HD)... and Lovell's struts and shocks front and back.

All up around $800.00 installed and aligned.

Wheel arch measurements. (will do again as these were measured on a slight slope)

    Front:
    Before 745mm after 770mm (25mm gain)

    Back:
    Before 755mm after 850mm (95mm gain  )

Didn't manage a before shot so here's one from a couple of months ago.

    And after shots...

My mechanic says the back should settle a bit in the next few weeks and I'm guessing the extra weight from the new bits going in soon will lower it a bit more at the back.

Drives very well so far, no bounce like I was getting over bumps with the old stuff and feels much more stable around corners.

:?: Anything I should keep an eye on while it settles in??
    Cheers, Leon

    Looks good Snaga
The only thing I had to watch after I lifted mine, was getting out of the car. 2 inch's doesnt sound like much and doesnt look like much, but it took me ages to stop falling out from the drivers seat.

        Thanks guys...

I have kicked the step once or twice but as you said Yota it's getting out that catches me off guard ops:

My poor little Corgi has no chance jumping in the car by herself now

Haven't had a chance to go off road yet but managed a few flex pix.

          Not quite full flex...

I don't know if Bribie will give me a chance to flex it up but still looking forward to the smoother ride

I bought the hardware from 4WD Trekmaster at Enoggera and a mate of mine on the Gold Coast (a mechanic) installed it for me... I was hopeing to help him with the install but I ended up in Sydney that week and his pregnant wife had to help.

If he wasn't going to be available then Zordo was my next option.

                  Lovell's

                  Snaga,

I have a 2000 TD RV and are looking to upgrade suspension as well. My mechanic has sugested Lovell's too. I have noticed you have the medium in the front and heavy duty at the back.
                  Any reason for this?
Why didn't you go heavy duty all round?
Why didn't you go medium all round and fit poly air's to the rear?
How has the ride been since its been fitted and has it dropped much?

I've just started looking and have so many ?'s, which sometimes its hard to get unbiased info unless someone's tried the product.

I am towing a Jayco offroad eagle for 4 months next year so I am looking at options as the standard just won't be up to it.

I have seen a kit for around $759. Is this a similiar price.

                  Cheers Graeme

Front springs depend on what you have fitted to the car. Things like steel bars, winches & duel batteries add a fair bit of waight and the diesel motor is heavyer than the petol one.
If you are thinking of getting any accesories, try and get them before the suspension is upgraded so they can match the spring waights to the car.

                      Hi Greame,

As Yota said the spring choices are based on accessories... I don't intend on getting a bull bar soon and I'm going to put my second battery in the back cargo area when I get a chance... so no extra weight over the front end.

The back is a little high at the moment but I'm hoping the cargo barrier, 2nd battery, and home made draws will take up some of the flex in the spring.
The other reason for the HD's in the back is in the next few months my FIL and I are buying a boat together so towing and loading up for camping were other consideration.

Having said all that, I do like the height of the back end and I figured with the spring only costing around $150 a pair I'd just replace the front springs with HD's if I needed to.

As for poly airs in the back... well I was working to a budget... and I carry a fair bit of weight for work as well so I figured I'd be mostly in the HD range anyway.

The 1st q's 4WD trekmaster asked me was petrol or diesel... so I guess their advise would be for HD's in the front to start with.

I've done about 4000 klms on them since they were installed mid August and unfortunately haven't done much... any real off road.
The on-road handling is great. No body roll, the Gateway Motorway actually feels smooth again and the breaking is much more responsive. (I guess that's more of a sign of how bad the original struts were  )

I did have a quick play when I took those flex shots and all felt great. I have driven a few dirt tracks the last 2 weekends and they went great over the corrugation and the wash out I hit at speed ops:

                      Hope this helps.
                      Cheers, Leon

                        Lovell's Suspension

                        Yota and Snag,

Thanks for the replies so quickly. My prado already has an alloy bullbar, lightforce 170's and 2nd battery. I'm gathering from your replies that this basically warrants the heavy duty.

How much lift is it supposed to give. (My prado has 130 on the clock and original suspension.)

How difficult is it to do it yourself, considering I have had a quote of double the purchase price to install.

If I go the heavy duty will this negate the fitting of polyairs?

                        Cheers

Talk to a susspension shop abot this, alloy is not as heavy as steel and you dont have a winch, but you have duel batts and a diesel so it may be borderline. I have heard if the front suspension is to stiff on a prado it can crack the shock mounts.

A heavy duty lift is usally about 50-70mm above standard, so it could seem quite a bit higher than 130k old springs.

Don't know much about polyairs but my understanding would be polyairs are adjustable so you change them to suit the load and the HD springs ride hard when not loaded... although I don't find it a rough ride at all when unloaded.
