  • Latest thoughts on 2nd battery location.

The time has come to mount the second battery under the bonnet.
I have tried to find some more info on the ARB mount that is near the fire wall but theres not much about.

Does anyone have one of these fitted and if so what the good/bad points over putting it near the left headlight?

The guard cracking issue seems to died away a bit and if there are any longtime users of the headlight mount, are you having any problems with cracks anywhere?

    Hi Strahan,
I have just performed similar research and asked the same questions to as many people as possible, including ARB, Pirahna, TJM etc. I was told that the new Pirahna battery trays should now have addressed the issue of them pulling through the guard. In respect to the firewall issue, most said it wouldnt be a problem, however the ARB guy mentioned it had only happened on vehicles that were consistentely on corrogations, but they had not seen any examples. Taking all of that into account, figuring that for my driving the risks were low, i went the Pirahna tray that mounts behind the headlight. Although it cost a few more $$$ i think it was worth it. I was suprised how many places it mounted to the vehicle and the steel plates that were included with the pack. Easy to install and everything comes neatly boxed up.
Only had it is for a few weeks but i have checked and rechecked everything weekly and all is holding up well.

    Just my thoughts.

Do you have any photos of your setup? If so can you please post them as I would like to see how well the pirahna tray is mounted.

Have you thought about putting it in the cargo area so that it can be removed if not needed.

Its the pirahna tray by what the guy at ARB southside in Brisbane said. He said that they do not sell there own tray due to the guard cracking.

The battery that it currently has an exide Extreme N50EX in it and thats just fits.

                        Hi Gents,
Thanks for the help on the photos. Here are some below

                        This is the tray installed

Where the powersteering resoviour sits when installed

                        Complete with Battery in place

                        Isolator

                        Complete.

All works well for me and fitted in place easily.
LEt me know if you have any questions.

                          My 20c worth

The pirhana tray as pictured above I had in my V6 for 3 years with no issues

The equivalent tray sold in that time for diesel was slightly different, and i think that tray whilst similar, had some inherent issues. One biggie being a strap on the outer side that rose higher on the guard for attachment. In the ones i have seen with cracking this strap was the problem, the lower strap on the petrol version has worked better

I swapped my piranha tray with another forum member in the knowledge that it worked fine in a petrol motor

In picking a tray for the new D4D I wasnt satisfied that this tray was a good solution, so i opted for the black one that goes up on the passenger firewall as pictured earlier. Whilst it wont take an N70 battery sizewise, I think it is a better solution in the D4D given the extra weight of the donk and some subtle differences in mounting between petrol and diesel.

ARB in Penrith (Sydney) supplied it

The new black one distributes the weight and shock over a more dispersed area, I think it is a much lower risk solution in the D4D

BUT, word of caution, the black one is a pig to install in VX or grande because of some extra electrickery stuff in that area, it is very tight and you need to be creative to get it all in, in the GX/GXL, it fits very snug

                          Cheers

                          glen

I have fitted 4 trays at work now including my own and they all have been from our local 4wd megastore. Outback battery tray I think is the brand. One of them was to a diesel 120 and it aready had an arb tray that had ripped out of the guard. The ones we use actually bolt to the normal spots as well as the inner guard up near the bonnet level. Can post pics if anyone is interested?

Can you post those pics please Mat?

I have measured up my battery and its about 13" long. I am wondering if anyone has the tray that mounts near the fire wall can look and see if I could bend or cut one end of the tray to make the battery fit? :?
