  • Step by Step TD 120 Dual Battery Instal with pics. Finished

I purchased a Piranha Battery Tray kit (Part No BTPRAD03) yesterday from Aaron at Coastal 4X4 in Jandakot WA. http://www.coastal4x4.net.au Awsome service, considering it was the first time I'd been there. I will definately be going back! Monday in fact for a fridge slide.....

The tray kit cost me $125.00 inclusive of GST.

So today, I started to install our dual battery system and decided to document it for anyone else that would like to get some idea of whats involved.

Firstly I pulled the kit apart and checked that all items were there. I actually ended up with an extra 6mm nut. The instructions that come with the kit are pretty average. I couldn't see any of the pictures on the photocopied instruction but it's easy enough to work out.

Kit as purchased. On my bargain $50 fridge cover and with the Engel replacement fridge socket for the back of the rig.

    Daddies little helper

Next job was to clean the area that the install was about to take place.

    Ready to go!

    Mitch,
What a great pictorial set of instructions.
    "Waiting for the wiring chapter"
It must be taking you a lot longer to compile this posting than actually fitting the second battery.

    As Pradogxlv6 said:- "TOP EFFORT".

Excellent work - just what I have been looking for.

Is the part number for the tray just for the diesels or is it the same for all 120 series?

                Hey Strahan,

The Diesels are different to the Petrol version. The Petrol version comes with a Power Steering resevoir mounting bracket as well. It's also dearer!

Similiar concept, really just the P/Steer bit thats different.

I thin someone else has covered the Petrol one on here?

Different brands have different fitment too.

                    Not entirely sure yet Rob,

But I dare say it will be an RAC battery as I used to work for them for quite a number of years (same as NRMA, RAA, etc) and have found their batts to be awsome, especially the new range and especially when I get 40% off!!!!

All my other 4bies and cars have had the older versions and I used to sell and fit them on the side of the road, so I know they are a good product...

I might make a trip to the depot tomorrow to see what they've got!!!

                    Will keep youse posted.

                      Awesome Mitch!

Was just about to talk to a sparky about an installation, but if your wiring description is going to be anything like the one for your tray, then I am going wait and do it myself. I work just a few minutes drive from Coastal 4x4 and never dropped in - will do so now.

Hope to get you out for the next WA meetup - I think we talked about one in the next couple of months.

                      Cheers,

                      Glenn

                          Mitch

Just a word of warning, when I sold my120 a couple of weeks ago I removed a few bits ( as you do ) and I was suprised at the damage under the second battery tray the bolt against the side wall had broken a piece of tin off you could easly push 50cents through & the two bolts that go straight down radiator side the metal just was not there i have some pics if i can do it i will put them on..

I hope you can see that link. I do not know as yet a good way to solve this other than to keep an eye on it after you have done a lot of corrugated stuff.

PS thanks to chippy for the info to put this link on. ( in introductions)

                            Thanks Spara,

Thats unbelievable. I didn't expect to see that much damage!

I will keep checking on that, thats for damn sure!!!!

I asked all the appropriate questions after searching on here and hearing about these issues, none of the ARB's, TJM's etc that I went to had heard of the problem..... Typical.

                            Cheers for that....

P.S. Picked up my Redarc Isolator yesterday.

Off on the plane to work now... Bye

Thanks for the great photo series, I wish I had a look before I installed one last weekend. I used the same type tray and it went in fairly easily. I used a Baintech Dual Battery system which also went in fairly easily. Ran the accessory power cable down the right hand chassis rail to the rear and in an existing bung up through the floor and out under the plastic side wall to my fridge. Working great so far, haven't tested it on corrugations yet but a little nervous now after seeing those damage photos.
