  • 12V Additional Sockets

    HI all

Thought I would pick fellow PP brains on where people have found to be the most useful places to place additional 12V outlets (for fridges, and other acc, etc)

Thinking primarily in the rear cargo area (specifically where?), but other locations sought after also.

Also, is there a standard 6mm cable system with socket available or is it best to buy the bits? Where is the best place to get them from?

    TIA

    Cheers

I used the WAECO setup (they sell a cable / plug DIY set for putting in an additional socket) and put it here ...

... I like it so much I'm going to run another one down the other side.

      Hi,

I had an auto electrician put in an additional 12v plug for the fridge so it was live all the time. It is near the existing one in the rear area but on one side of the recessed area for storing things above the rear seat attachment. We have just had a 3 week holiday & that site was perfect as it is out of the way & does not stick out at all. Haven't learnt how to do photos yet !!

        Borgy,

I get get all my auto electrical supplies from ABR.
        http://www.sidewinder.com.au/
It's just too easy to ring up Derek and have exactly what you need delivered right to your door. I'm in Perth and ABR is in QLD and it's still the easiest way for me to get good qaulity gear.
As far as standard cabling, for the fridge outlet in the rear I used 10mm2 twin that ABR sells for solar applications. That way you only need to run one cable, can can connect the negative straight back to battery and you'll never have volt drop issues.

Here is how I did mine, it's a bit old but still relevant I think.

It's certainly still relevant - as I'm just playing around with adding some more power outlets in the front and rear of the console - I'm just running out of space

It's worth mentioning that I found those Sutar sockets in the console a bit unreliable, as there is no positive mechanism for holding the plug in. If you bump them (with certain plugs) they can lose contact. Ideally I'd use hella sockets next time, and change my plugs or use an adapter.

One Hella plug on the RHS under the factory socket.

Two on the LHS in the back corner.

All run from the auxillary battery via a distribution fuse box hidden in the cubby hole.

Great stuff, just what I am looking to do!

Couple of questions if I can.

Is the hella one on the RHS under OE a different socket type to the two on the LHS?

Does all three extra sockets go to the new distribution box? (just intereest in the path you ran the new cabling!)

What brand is fuse box? Where did you source the hella sockets and the distribution box?

                  Cheers

LHS are standard cigarette lighter sockets. RHS is a Hella fitting which is a smaller size. I remove the red plastic thingy from the end of my Waeco plug and it "clicks" in nice and tight.

Yes. All cabling run behind the panels and under carpet for RHS socket.

Fuse box came from Jaycar as did my cable. 4G cable from battery to fuse box and 8G cable from box to sockets.

Have seen some other forum comments around having the fuse near the battery - is there any thing to be aware of/consider as to putting it in the rear (as byrnsie has) or up near the battery source?

                          Borgy,
Below are some photos of my setup, not as flash as Bynsie's. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve.
In my case running a single heavy duty wire to the rear then fusing it out was the best option as I could not be bothered running 4 or more sets of wires back to the fuse box under the bonet for each outlet. However I did install a auto resetting circuit breaker under bonet just in case.

Installation with 4 outlets in the rear, one to run the fridge and 3 for accessories and can be expanded as the need arises.

Auto reset curcuit breaker under the bonet.

Added an extra 12v outlet with heavy duty wiring to the rear cargo area to support our Waeco fridge or other 12v accessories:

                              Re: 12V Additional Sockets

Here is a thread I started on our club forum about 12-volts. There are so many kinds that once you know what's out there you can find the perfect application for your speciffic location.

With all the discussions of 12 volt outlets and Dave's (dmsavor) awesome rear 12 volt mod I have looked at many 12 volt options I wanted to share with you. Feel free to add your own, but please this is for adding outlets not extensions or 1 into 3 replicators. Real technical stuff here.

Here is the Blue Room thread on adding a 12 volt.

I also looked into the OEM 12 volt from Toyota they go for $13.84 for the 12 volt and $5.17 for the spring loaded cover. I ordered the cover to see if it can be modded to a Radio Shack receptacle for you guy's. I thought the cover would be important for placing one in the dash box. I will let you know next week.
*UPDATE-- The Toyota 12-volt cover ($5.17 above) does not fit on the Radio Shack outlet. You need to order both parts to make it work. -BM

The most commonly used 12 volt receptacle is the Radio Shack 12 volt. It is easy to get (at almost every RS except the mall stores). It is cheap and a no brainier (unless you are Atif). It is a no frills outlet, but has a lot to be desired in the off-roading reliability department. It is available on-line at Radio Shack for a reasonable $6.99.

For those wanting a stronger receptacle try the marine plugs. They use marine grade connectors and usually have a more water proof boot to cover the receptacle when not in use. They are available in single or up to sets of 3. Available at West Marine for $9.99 ea.

For some that have items like refrigerators that have to remain plugged in at all times I recommend the Sealink 12 volt outlet. They are identical to the Engel outlets (but cheaper). They have a threaded plug (you have to change) and screw securely into the receptacle. No amount off off-roading will loosen this one. They are available at Cabela's for $24.99 as a set.

Here is a nice little Australian outlet that fits flush to a surface, so the plug is not sticking out into areas with restricted leg room. It only requires a small hole to be drilled, so there are less scars if moved. It is available from 12-Volt World for $16.00 (OZ) and has to be shipped from Australia. It may be worth it.

If you want to add a 12 volt receptacle to the outside of the vehicle for camping accessories you need a 12 volt with a strong weather resistant cover. There are 12 volts made for RV's that seem to work well. Available from RV Supply Warehouse for $12.99. They also have a similar model from Bass Pro Shops for $6.49. that fits well under the vehicle.

Most Bruisers are adding the 12 volt receptacle in the rear compartment. It's dark back there, so found this 12 volt with an LED light. I saw this one and thought it would look cool in an FJ (especially a Voodoo). It is available from Auto Barn for a reasonable $12.95.

For the RTT I need to wire a very small 12 volt outlet, so I opted for the Bargman Bunk Outlet. You need to switch your standard cigarette lighter 12 volt (male end) to the electric guitar style plug. It is available on-line at Schreck RV for a reasonable $6.00.

For my camper I wanted to add a cigarette lighter style 12 volt to run the Sirius satellite receiver off of and charge cell phones when not plugged into 110v. This 12 volt comes in a home style face plate that looks good in a camper. It is available from Fish House Supply for $11.95.

They also have small steel face plate models for $4.95 same page(but didn't fit the style of the interior).

Here is a nice little set up I found. It's a 12 volt outlet with a switch for when you want to control the flow of electricity to the plug. It would look nice in the rear of the FJ. It is available from JC Whitney for a reasonable $14.99. I have wanted to order this to see what it really looks like. Any one feel free check it out....Bueller.....

Now for my favorite. This panel comes from Australia and was made for the Land Cruiser. It has two 12-volt receptacles, two 2-prong outlets, dials for volts & amps, and an isolator. I think this would look cool in the rear of the FJ and it resembles an aircraft instrument panel. It is available form 12-Volt World for $150.00 (OZ). I'm not sure if they will ship, but if you want one I can work it out with Matt.

I will add more later along with a power inverter install.

"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia" (Charles Schultz)

I have a 2007 FJ Cruiser (An American knock-off 120) Considerably built up.
