  • A Good Aussie Swag

I'm chasing a good quality Australian made swag. dont really want one from China as I'd like to support an Australian business. I have no idea where to start. I've seen the website for Viking swags, and they seem to have a pretty good swag, but how would I know? any suggestions? I'm happy to pay more for an Australian product.

    Cheers

      BlackSheep,

I just purchased a brand new and my very first swag from Mr Swagman.

Very nicely finished, well made and a great swag, so says my mate who is going to replace his 11 year old swag with one.

I havent used it in anger yet, but tried it out in the lounge and it was great. Even the missus wanted to "try" it out

      It must be good then!!!!!

      Regards,

      Rob

Blacksheep I recommend "Burke & Wills" brand, such as the "Coolabah" which I have.

Very well made swag with good quality canvas, aircraft aluminium poles and quality mattress....

I've been using it a lot lately and have fallen in love with it :P

I have a Down Under Swags Brumby XL (same as Samo's above). Comes recommended.

I like the look of the Southern Cross Canvas ones too.

P.S Samo, I got ropes and pegs with mine. Or did you loose them?

Samo, I wouldn't see it as too big a loss. The pegs are only about 150mm long and are made from small diameter steel so I don't use them.

However, it'd be worth asking the retailer because if you were meant to get something you paid for and didn't they need to sharpen up their act.

I can recommend the Oztrail Mitchell King Single swag (http://www.oztrail.com.au/swags/mitchell.php); its a damn good swag using good quality canvas, double stitching and heavy duty zips. It also has small pockets to store wallets/keys etc and places to hook other small bits of clothing like beanies, gloves and possibly a small lamp. I'm a fairly big fella (horizontally and vertically) and I have no problems fitting in it.

Oztrail is an Australian company but it looks as if their swags are manufactured in China.

When you do find a swag you like, there are a few things you should know that I found out way too late.
If the matress is anything like my swag it can absorb what seems to be an entire river worth of water and it did take 7 days to dry while hanging in the sun on the sagging clothes line.
However I was not told how to waterproof canvas which would have saved all of this trouble. To waterproof the canvas, you set your swag up in the sun and give it a bit of a hose. Allow it to dry and repeat another 2 times. All the stitching should seal up and the swag should be a lot more waterproof than previously.
07 Prado GXL, D4D manual, silver and a fridge with constantly changing beer levels.

Thats a recommendation that Oztrail make for their canvas tents and swags, either in the documentation or on a tag sown on that item.

I have a Mr Swagman and am very happy. I've got the double, top of the range with the hoops either end. Before first use I did the waterproof thing as detailed above, with mattress out. First use it bucketed down, before snowing. We were camped at Horseyard Flat(1500 metres). Very slight leak through seams in two corners. Gave it another soak and no probs since.
