  • Colorado 95 Suspension Lift

Hi, I am a newbie here on the forum ,( from UK) and after searching through the forum, I decided to upgrade my Colorado 95 ‘s suspension .

I used a combination of standard Toyota suspension components to achieve a 75mm lift. ( thanks in particular to the post by Beast2h)
I have order the springs/coils from Milner Off road, it is standard height +20% extra stiffness : Front springs/coils are form a 120 series and strut is standard 90/95 series. I all so add a 30mm spacer I made out of aluminium . Rear springs/coils are LC80 series front springs and shocks are LC80 rear shocks; they are 50mm longer and 1.5 times the diameter of the original 90/95 shock
Removing the front struts I had to chisel/drill the struts of that secure the strut assembly to the mounting bracket, the corrosion on the bolts/nuts is very bad!!! I then use 2 spring compressors to remove the coil. With the strut assembly dismantled , I knock out the 3 studs in top retaining plate so I can fit longer bolts to accommodate the thickness of the spacer as well.
To re-fit the assembled strut was just the reverse of the above but to get the bottom bolt in for the strut I had to use the bottle jack ( insert between the top wish bone and fender) to push it down to get the bolt in.

Removing the rear springs/coils, I Just disconnect the rear sway bar links (broke one off and couldn’t get the ball joint nut off, so just cut it off with grinder, need to make new ones that is 50mm longer any way) I then remove the shocks, bottom bolt undo easy, the top is a pain in the a**s totally corroded in the collecting bowl, you see what I mean when you stick your hand up there. So out come the hacksaw blade and start cutting below bottom rubber of the strut on top of shock. Very time consuming, halve way through I just bent the shock back wards and forward and brake the dam thing off. Same on other side just more difficult with exhaust silencer in the way. With the shocks and sway bar removed I just lower the trolley jack in the middle of the diff. (wheels are obviously removed and tall jack stands under chassis) and springs just drop out. Fitting the new ones I needed to compress them with spring compressors to get them in, lift the trolley jack again, just make sure the springs seat in the right place (careful not to lift truck off the jack stands) Then it is just a case of fitting the new shocks and the sway bar. (At the moment my sway bar is just tied up cause I haven’t finished the extended links)

The end result is a 50mm lift on the front suspension and a 100mm lift on the rear end, the 305/70R16 Good Year Mud Terrains gave another 50mm lift. So at the moment the rear sits a bit higher than the front, but will level out as soon as it gets loaded with the usual stuff.
The handling on road is good even with rear sway bar still disconnected.
The articulation on the rear is very good, see photos. The front is okay, but will look to improve it a bit more, may be longer travelling shocks like the OME, TJM or Bilstein.

So, now I just need to get her off road and work the suspension a bit…….
