  • Location for Dual Battery.

I have read all the dual battery threads, but have not seen much comment on where the battery is installed.
Almost everyone seems to have it behind the headlight on the drivers side.
However, i have mine close to the firewall on the passenger side. It was an ARB factory installation and has been fine.
This has freed up that big drivers side headlight space for my toolkit box which i have installed under the bonnet, where i keep all my spares. Any thoughts?

i was also quoted by ARB to fit the battery in the same position seems to be a ARB option, i personally like the idea and when i am ready i will fit it in this position given some of the issues with battery trays and front guards it can't hurt to try this different location.

Sounds interesting, Does it make it any harder for the servicing of the motor?

        Pics please !

I have had at least three services since having it installed and had no comment from Toyota. You will see that ARB move some components whcih in fact are re-bolted to the mounting tray. I like the spot because it was previously small but 'dead' space and now it means that large space behind the headlamp can be used for my tools.

Looks good, Wonder if it puts more weight on that side though?

Can you please reduce the images to a max of 800 pixels wide.

              Cheers.

                Thats interesting.

With the cracking issues it does make sense to try a different location. as long as the tray is solid and doesn't induce cracking in another area i think they are on a winner. In your first post I was thinking the fire wall on the drivers side. Cause I too think the 2 batteries on one side might contribute to the guard cracking issue. but it might help it???

Very Interesting setup Drummo, that's a lot of weight on that inner guard, but I guess one needs to try all options to combat inner guard failures. Hope it works out O.K.
That is a good idea about your spares, you will probably need to buy/ make a tray to act as a support for your spares box behind the drivers headlamp assembly as the inner guards are very light gauge material.

Yeah i have been concerned about the weight of the two batteries in similar spots, but a rough NT trip later and it is all still OK.
                    Here are two more photos.
One more close up of the ARB tray and how it has mounting points for the fuel filter to move it out of the way.
The other photo shows the smallish plastic toolbox i have put where most people have their second battery. I intend to have a steel box custom made for this spot behind the headlamp to give more strength and space.

ROFL So behind the headlight a battery is weightless !!

The battery mounted at the rear passenger side is much better option as it's by far a stronger location and the weight being on that side means a little better distribution, as 90% of the time it's driver only on board although 20kg of battery and tray still leaves 100kg heavy on the drivers side for some...

What you need to realise is the vacant position is not always the best position to mount a battery or other heavy objects. ARB have obviously done their home work and not chosen the easy way out.

Doubtful... Prados crack here aswell (and these cracks are a more significant issue than the ones under some drivers side trays), and thats without the extra weight of a battery. At least it'a smaller battery I guess, although now there's two of them on one side.

                            a little better distribution,
Also doubful.... 90lts of fuel, crank battery and a second battery all on the passengers side... most of us will need to eat a lot of donuts to cancel that out.

ARB have obviously done their home work and not chosen the easy way out.
A chat to the guys at ARB (Regency Park) reveals that they are offering trays for both locations. The drivers side tray costs around a $100 more than the passenger side one, so more likely a commercial reason.
I got a blank look when I asked about the cracking issues associated with both locations.

Wally, I wasnt on that wave length.
My thoughts about 2 batteries on the one side was the weight that is on the one wheel arch/ guard area. Not a whole cars weight distribution.

It could be good or bad. Time will tell.
