  • Air Cond on the blink. Quick fix

Noticed this morning the A/C tripped out and the green light on the a/c switch was flashing. Tried manually turning it off and on again a few times but it would only stay on for about 5 secs and cut out again.
I figured the system was probably low on gas, but decided to call a couple of auto sparky's to get their opinion. The first wouldn't offer any opinion without having a look and testing the system, the second said it was most likely the compressor clutch slipping as they have a sensor to detect if there is a different rate to the engine rpm and therefore it was likely the sensor was shutting it down. A new compressor would most likely be the answer.!  Just what I wanted to hear..!!!!!

I decided to do some research, seemed no one else has had the same experience as I couldn't find anything on PP but found a similar question asked on yahoo answers and the answer was.! THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM WITH AIR CONDITIONER FAILURE ON THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE IS THE A/C MAGNETIC CLUTCH RELAY.

With nothing to lose I decided to take a peek in the fusebox, and swapped the MG/CLT relay with the fog light relay and :!: :!: it worked a treat. 8) And believe it or not the fog lights still work as normal.!! I will be grabbing a spare relay just in case but I don't think I've ever had a repair bill that cheap.. 8)

Thought I would share my find, so maybe someone else can find the same simple cure. 8) I'll send the invoice out later if you do.......

I have had it happen twice (in 5 years), a month or two ago. Both times the AC had been on for a fair while (highway driving) and it didn't come good until the engine had been off for a while. Hasn't happened since so I don't think it is short of refrigerant.

I was initially thinking the evaporator may have iced up but that couldn't have happened as there was still air flow through the vents. If it happens again I will try your fix.

Edit: just noticed Justo's wheels are the same age as mine. Maybe the flashing light means it is time to change cars.

Can't win em all, but rather happy that was a definite win..

It's the mg/clt relay in the main fuse box in the engine bay. There's several the same colour and size. I wouldn't bother with a spare, just swap the fog light one into it's place if it ever happens. Can live without foggies..but can't live without the cold air..

Had a problem with my 120 when new. It was actually overfilled with refrigerant. When running the overpressure sensor switch would disconnect the compressor till the pressure dropped. The sytem would only blow warm air because the compressor would only cycle on for a short period of a few seconds before being disconnected. The cure was to let some gas go. It now works absolutely fine.

whilst on the subject of air con, is there any regular maintenance needed on the air con unit or do we just wait till there's a problem with it . ( ie in the middle of nowhere in 40 deg heat )

                      Aircon fix works a treat

Thanks for the fix. My AC died a few days ago. I did the basic checks - look for oil to show a leak, check 12V appearing at compressor - not there so fed 12V from the batt and the compressor ran. The switch light was solid green. I found your fix and changed the relays (pulled over as we were driving and I had the laptop on to find a solution!). 10 seconds later and the aircon is fixed. The relay was faulty as the fog lights now do not work but they can be fixed later. Thanks again. I had no idea what MG/CLT was until I read your post - They could have added AC to their acronym. Brook.
