  • Ignition power under the bonnet

    I am currently installing a second battery in my car. I have everything sorted but can’t seem to find anything under the bonnet that only has power when the ignition is turned to on. I originally thought of the wiper motor but there is many different wires in that loom. Does anyone know of where I might be able to pick this power up from?

    I know it sounds like cheating but I would probably run it from the dash (acc fuse or ciggie lighter) and out through the rubber grommet in the firewall.

    What is its purpose ? Do you need acc power to trigger a relay ??
    Just wondering what sort of current draw you want this feed for.

      The idea is so when you turn the key to either accessory or to off the two batteries will be separated no matter how much charge there is in the batteries. I too had thought about the cig lighter chippy but doesn’t that also work when the key is on accessory?

        I gotta a sparkey to do mine. The solenoid only kicks in when the ignition is in "Start" mode.

          OK ... now I get what you are asking ops: ops:

          Now I understand what you are doing ... you're right ... the Ciggie lighter won't give you what you want.

          What about the ignition fuse in the fuse holder box under the bonnet ??

            I just had a look at the fuse box and I am guessing that things like the heated mirrors that a GXL doesn't have might be the go but I can't work out how to get into the base of the box ops:
            I am still hoping that there might be something that I can tap into a bit easier. Maybe there is an easy way to get into the base of the fuse box????

                    Scojohara, it sounds like you're using a standard solenoid which will not monitor battery voltage. Just confirm that the ignition source you're taping into only has 12v on it when the ignition is on, going before the ignition relay will see you having 12v constantly and will not disconnect your aux battery from your main.

                    I had to do a fix on one of these when we were up the cape as it was draining both batteries... Result, one happy Toyota owner jump starting a Nissan!! haha priceless.

                        I put mine on the wiper motor and it works fine. The power is there to drive the wiper back to the neutral position so it is fine for holding in a continuous soleniod.
                        Cant tell you what colour wire to use though as im about 1500ks away from the car!

                            Thanks all for you help. I ended up doing what Duff did and taking it off the wiper motor. This also dropped power when the motor was being started which is perfect.
