I have taken my battery controller out of my other car to fit up to the Prado. It has voltage regulation written on the front however it doesn't have spike protection written on there. I am unsure how important it is to have it on a dual battery system. Anyone know?

I have installed an AntiZap Surge Protector to the main battery, costs only $22.00 from

My dual battery setup is a basic one using the old truckies method of hooking both batteries via the solenoid. No special isolater, connected to the ignition, so when truck is not running no charging is taking place. The antizap protector ensures the electronics ain't spiked.Cheers,

Redarcs have in built surge protection. See page 3 "Frequently Asked Questions".

This system is symple but can have its draw backs, if the solenoid is conected directly to the ignition (without a delay) and the aux batt is quite flat, as soon as you turn the ignition on, the soleniod will conect the 2 batteries together taking charge from the main. If enough charge is drawn from the main, it may have trouble starting the engine. This is the only draw back of a very simple design. Quite often the simple ones are the good ones.

Fingers crossed, so far not had a problem. I run the fridge, camp lights, winch off the aux battery. Noticed a couple of times the fridge cut-off when voltage dropped to 10.4volts. Didn't have a problem starting the truck.
Scott, from memory I think its 13.4v
