  • Inverters with USB power...

Considering most mobile electronics these days can be powered/charged by USB, is there an inverter that has a USB power option? I know you can get 'USB car chargers' but I'd prefer something with a little more thought/effort put into the design. I can't see the point of converting 12VDC to 240VAC then back to 5VDC to charge something.

Was in Kmart the other day and they have a self contained "jump start "like power pack with a 150 W inverter and a 5v USB socket as well. comes with 240 v and 12 v charging leads. not a great volume of power but at $ 49 and about the size of a old style video camera could be handy for charging the phone or running a laptop.

Are you sure the cigarette lighter plug in units turn the volts into AC and then back to 5V DC?
I would have thought that they just reduce the 12V DC to 5V DC. For only 20 bucks they cant have too much trickery inside.

The plug in 5 volt supplies use a small switch mode power supply to reduce the 12 v down to 5 volts without a reduction in current loss or wasted power. I bought one for my daughter to run her ipod in her car and to charge her phone on the go, has two outlets. only cost $10 from Zazz on the net.

Yes I have one of the accessory socket style 12-5 converters. I was looking for something I could use for fixed wiring.

If you want a fixed solution try Jaycar they have a ip65 usb socket
CAT. NO. MP3047 for $17 that you could connect up to their DC to DC converter CAT. NO. MP3204 @ $33. they have another option that is a lighter socket that has a usb and still retains the 12V socket for $14. If you go in and see them they are pretty helpfull, I use them a lot to source different options in my line of work.

I have one of these and it's great. I can charge my laptop and pda, even occasionally use the electric shaver.
