Check the earth as all of them have this in common.

don't think it could be the earth, as it would use the towball as the earth to the vehicle.
maybe check if it's been connected.
silly statement, but it's possible a first year fitted the wiring :?

Toyota install a set of relays in the back of the car to isolate the trailer wirirng from the car wiring, that way if the trailer has a fault it shouldn't affect the car.

There is a fuse in the engine bay that needs to be inserted to power up these relays, the first of Team Piggy's links talks about this fuse.

we have problems with our trailer wiring in that the cruise control doesnt work properly. The trailer wiring is ok. And apparently the trailer wiring is correct as toyota have since checked with their plug tester. ??????????
it is a pain in the but on long drives.

Strange as this may seem but Toyota have an active recall for Hi-Lux 4x4's for hazrd light problems when there is a bullbar and trailer hooked up. Here are the details:

Vehicle Recall Search Results for Toyota Hilux 4x4 (31 January 2005 - 31 August 2007)

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem: Hazard lights fail with bullbar and trailer
                Make: Toyota
                Model: Hilux 4x4
                Variant:
                Date Range: 31 January 2005 - 31 August 2007
                VIN Ranges: see file
                Status: Active
Defect: The extra indicator lights fitted in the bull bar overload the electrical hazard flasher system when the vehicle is towing a trailer.
Consequences: The hazard lights do not operate properly.
Corrective action: Toyota dealers will fit a special bullbar relay harness kit to vehicles fitted with a genuine Toyota bullbar.

For the record neither do I. Just that the Hi-Lux recall is pretty specific about the configuration of the car so it may also occur in other Toyota 4x4's with certain configs.

I just thought it was interesting that there happened to be a recall out concerning trailer wiring and electrical problems on Hi-Lux cars.

It has worked fine for the last 3 years and just died. The plug has had a few dunkings so maybe off toa sparky.

I looked for the fuse but could not find anything marked trailer and all of my usual car lights cruise control etc work fine

Not quite sure what you are saying / asking but on mine the extra fuse they added for the trailer indicators is in the fuse box behind the battery and is between the Radio and Door lock fuses. And to keep you looking there is no sticker or indication added to tell you the location.

The only hints to find it are that it is not listed under the cover in the descriptions and the installed fuse is different from all the OEM fuses (it doesn't have the rating on top).
As you can see in this post its not marked, by all your accounts it sounds like this fuse is blown, just replace it and see if that fixes it. Will save you $100 at the auto lecy!!!
