  • Poor radio reception

I have seen the previous thread Re poor radio reception and the mention of fitting another aerial external to the existing window ones.
Can someone please post how and where the coax is connected to the radio and what is the best aerial to use.

    Thanks Wayne

matt, or Pradogxlv6, has done this.
not sure thou if he listed this as 1 of his mods or did a topic.
from pics i've seen he used and aerial and bracket coming from under the bonnet.
    maybe PM matt and ask

The Aerial connection on the back of the radio is a standard car aerial connector. Simply instal an universal type aerial (guard mount etc.) run the cable to the radio, unplug old cable and plugin new one.

          Re: Poor radio reception

hi have you checked if the wire from the radio is connected to the wire near the pillar of the window. SOmetimes if have somebody serviced your unit they might have unplugged the antenna socket. That's why you have a poor reception.

can pick up any old bracket to do this most places like autobarn have them floating around.

see top right of this pick, there's a black bracket, that was where i mounted my UHF antenna (before i had the ARB Bar) and i had another one on the other side that held the external radio antenna. both of them are gathering dust under the house now that i've got the bar though.

i plan to install an amplifier to the radio antenna, will do some pics when i get around to that!

                Re: Poor radio reception

Has anyone got any pictures of a external antenna which they are happy with.
I just installed one on the front bull bar and it seems to wobble to much.I think i'll try to get a better one with a stiffer spring.
                Any Ideas??

                  Re: Poor radio reception

I too am very disappointed with the radio reception from the window antenna. I had the Polaris unit fitted around the same time as having the windows tinted so not sure who is to blame. I would also be interested in external antennas (for the radio not the UHF), preferably ones that won't break off the first set of trees I go through

If you have had a Metallic tint/film placed over the window antenna then this will possibly affect your reception. In my case I like to listen the footy & cricket when in the Prado & they are on AM band, which is most affected in these circumstances. The tint guy I used had done a few Prados, he simply put a non metallic film on the antenna windows that was tinted dark. He won't guarantee it for the life of the car like the metallic stuff, but it does the job & reception fine.
Wherever you go..there you are, it's just more comfortable getting there in the Prado....

                      Re: Poor radio reception

Thanks Gavdan. I was told the same thing but the reception (especially am) is poor. I don't know whether he forgot to put non-metalic on the rear windows or if it was something else. I think I probably need to go for one of those antennas they put on BMW's & the like that look like a fin sitting just off the roof.

I think those fin antennas are GPS antennas. Those vehicles probably have their radio antennas in the glass.

                          Re: Poor radio reception

I have a al cheapo aerial from supercheap, was 7 foot, no about 4 1/2 foot.......kept hitting trees, overhangs and birds with it.

just used a "z" bracket fitted under the bonnet.

fantastic reception, and I have no worry's if it breaks, a new one will only cost about $30 if that
