  • Rear Power Socket

    Hello All,
Sorry if this question has being answered before but was unable to find any answers using the search function…..

I have recently purchased a Prado and wondering if anyone knows where the relay is for the cargo compartment power socket. I don’t want the power to go off when the ignition is switched off. I previously had a Jackaroo was able to locate the relay, remove it and replace with a bridging wire with two spade lugs on it. Had a quick look at the relay panel near the battery and nothing was obviously labelled there.

Also, the standard battery is 250mm long and I wanted to install a heavy duty 300mm long battery. The tray doesn’t look like it will be long enough although I have been told the car will accept a 300mm battery.

    Any feedback appreciated

    Hi Daryl,

your unlikely to be able to do what you want without looking in a workshop manual to find the correct wiring colour and then modify to suit your needs. Your better off running a new feed off your battery via its own fuse and then connect it at the outlet itself. I wouldnt rely off the factory cabling if you exceed the recommended amp rating. The oulet may say max 10amps, although if your plugged it device is pulling more then this most owners would increase the fuse size creating another problem. Melting cable due to increased load, this could lead to a internal fire resulting in loss of vehicle. If you choose to run a new supply to the outlet, make sure its at least 2.5mm to 4mm in diamater multi strand auto cable. Places like Supa chit or Battery World will be able to help you. Make sure you also use rated lugs, Narva etc. Dont rely on $2 shop multi packs, better still invest in a dual battery setup.

    I hope this helps,

    Zook.

      Hi Daz,

Any reason why you're not going down the second battery route? I would have to say that it would be a much better option than what you're trying to achieve.

The fridge only draws 3 amps so power is not a problem......
It was so simple on the jackaroo. just pull out the relay and put a bridging wire in place of the relay switching contacts. The orginal fuse, wiring etc is all reatined and just the power doesnt go off when you turn off the ignition. Im sure it would be just as easy in the prado, its just a matter of finding the relay. It would have to accessable as relays fail from time to time and need to be replaced. Also I had a 100amp hour batter which powered caravan lights, fridge and accessoroies and never went flat. Mind you I carry a portable jump started just in case...
I was able to get hold of a very comprehensive manual for the jackaroo (11000 pages) so hopefully I can get hold of something similar for the prado.

        Cheers

                Hi Dazza65

It is a simple process to join Lcool and many PP members are also members there. You can buy the Prado workshop manual from Toyota on CD (approx $70). I am not sure of the link on this but if you search, you should be able to find the part number for the manual somewhere on PP

Thanks to the original poster oldmanmonaro over at LCOOL.
1 Pry off the small panel next to the ignition switch

2 Remove the side panel next to the accelerator, It snaps in place
3 Remove the lower dash panel - 3x10mm screws - 1 at the top and 2 at the bottom

4 Disconnect the wires to the switches on the lower dash panel and swing the lower dash panel out of the way
5 Remove the 2 nuts and 1 screw holding the fuse panel in place and drop the fuse panel down to gain access to the relays on the top of the panel.

6 Remove the relay marked as ACC-SKT.
7 Make up a jumper lead consisting of 2 spade terminals and connect into the relay pins location as shown on the photo below

8 Put the relay in a safe place in case you want to put the system back to how it was from the factory.
9 Reassemble the dash in reverse order to how it was removed.
10 The front and rear accessory sockets should now operate at all times. The cigarette lighter will still only operate when the ingition is on.

                    Re: Rear Power Socket

Having problem with my rear power socket. Does anyone know if it has it's own separate fuse or does it go with the other power socket fuse in the front?
