  • Fitting 80 series shocks

Not sure if this has been covered before. I just helped a mate with some suspension mods and thought you guys might be interested.

He was after more down travel in the rear and we ended up fitting 80 series shocks which are 4"(100mm) longer when at full extension.

BTW he already had HD coils in.... standard coils would fall out with this mod!

You can see in the picture below the difference. Both the 90 series and new 80 series shocks are Monroe 4x4 nitrogen charged shocks. Cost for the 80 series shocks was around $240 for both (retail)

    Re: Fitting 80 series shocks

At compression they are "about" an inch longer than the 90 series shock (I think I actually measured 23mm, but I'm now working from memory)

The bump stop was dropped with a 10mm packer. Seems the Monroe 90 series shock still has a bit of compression left in it when the axle is against the bump stop.

I also got introduced to a guy who is apparently an engineer an Monroe. He told me Monroe makes Old Man Emu shocks (with ARB doing their own R&D for valving specs) and the Monroe Gas Magnums are physically identical, the only difference being the valving. He seemed genuine so can't say if it was true or BS.

      Re: Fitting 80 series shocks

      Hey MickL,

Just wanted to confirm that these are the 80series rear shocks for stock applications, i.e they are shock designed for an 80s without 4inch lift or anything?

If you don't mind me asking how did the ride turn out? I've currently got 2inch lifted king springs in it, would seriously look at this mod if its worthwhile and they would match up with my springs.

      Cheers,

      Brent

Yes, Just use the part number above.

I wrote down the exact measurements for compressed and fully extended and I'll post them when I get back home (away at the moment)

If you don't mind me asking how did the ride turn out?
I thought the ride was great, but the previous shocks where well past their best. Kings HD raised springs are also in this vehicle (he has drawers etc in rear)

-The springs where fitted with a retainer though as at full articulation they are only just being held in place by the skin of their teeth!

Wait until I put the exact measurements up and see if they meet your needs.

          Re: Fitting 80 series shocks

standed length rear(i think) 80series shocks. and 80series standed front coils in the rear on the prado work well in the rear of the prado. i added a 1" block to the bump stop mainly because of the 285's! before i had raised heavy duty kings in the rear but found they did not flex and ride as well as the 80series setup. the 80series coils i used are second hand factory coils. also the 80series setup rides higher than the kings setup!

            Mick,
I know it is a long time back, but could you pls post the measurements that you mention in your last post

            Beast2h,
            pls clarify...
you have used 80 series front coils and rear shocks in the rear of the 95 Prado? and they are better and higher than HD Kings ?
What are you using in the front of your prado?
If you can, pls provide some measurements

            Thanks guys!!

                  Re: Fitting 80 series shocks

Sorry guys, I've looked everywhere but can't find the note paper where I wrote down all the measurements.

If you use HD raised King springs with the 80 series shocks then the spring will be lose under full droop. Not enough to come out but they are noisy as they seat again.

The vehicle I mention above has fitted a spring retainer, another option would be a small spring spacer 20mm or so.
