  • Help with factory fog lights

Hi All. Just spent a few hours on search and going through all 7 pages in Electrical.

i have a 08 D4-D GX. i have been reading up on the fog lights, but its all to do with the rear ones. Good Info on it too.

anyway, I've managed to get myself some GXL front factory fog lights to put in my bumper. is it possible that the GX has the same lighting loom as the GXL? i see there are the plugs behind the bumper for the fog lights, but would this be an active circuit if i were to get a switch for the fogs? if this circuit exists, would the plug be readily accessible behind the blanks in the dash? i would be looking at getting the factory style fog switches to use.

i was also looking into making the rear fogs work like many on PP have. is there only one type of factory fog light switch? ie, the symbol on the switch may be different for the front and the rears. i know a lot of you guys are getting the newpro switches, which have an indicator light in it, which negates the need for the factory dash indicators.

i have the Toyota fog switch part number as 84165-33040. can anyone confirm this part number please? would there be a listing for front and rear fog light switches also?

    thanks heaps in advance.

The circuit should be connected. But the problem is the front fog light switch is on the stalk where you turn on the headlights. If you do not have that you might have to replace the stalk.......
    Thanks

if the wiring is there, is there any way i can tap into the loom with out replacing the stalk?

      thanks for your quick reply.

Yes if you know what you are doing. The stalk has a connector behind the airbag. You can remove the airbag and have a look at the connector. It might be a bit messy to find the wire under the dash. Try looking at the repair manual in the cdrom...that might help.
        Thanks

Re: Help with factory fog lights

I have never owned a GX but the GXL have the same wire harness as the VX and Grande. I use the air suspension wiring for my driving lights through a simple rewire.

The wiring maybe there, but the switches, fuses and the relays are not.

To save manuf. cost, I suspect all models have the same harness. So it is possible to do.

Have you checked with toyota re: cost for a new stalk ? as it will more than likely be a plug'n'play accessory.

Access to the stalk DOES NOT REQUIRE removing the airbag. If you remove 3 screws keeping the steering column cover in place (one under neath, and one behind either side of the steering wheel that can only be accessed by turning the steering wheel 90 degrees to the left and right).

After you have removed the steering wheel cover, access to all the wiring entering the steering wheel is easily available.
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

It would I suspect be simpler to run a new loom in if there isnt existing fuses/relays etc.

Re: Help with factory fog lights

I did the foglight thing on our Corolla, and the stalk was very similar in look to the Prado and that was around $70 a year ago.
We then had to put a relay in the fuse box and grabbed that from the wreckers for bugger all.
I suspect the same setup or similar would be in the Prado.
By using the factory wiring, it would be simple to install and the foglight indicators on the dash may work too!

              Good luck, Mat

Re: Help with factory fog lights

With mine, I just did a cable run the same as spots. The fogs have an independent switch and come on with the park lights if required.

I did ask toyota how much the parts would cost, if I remember it is above $150, so I went the cheap option.

thanks guys, heaps of info and help.

i think i will be running an ARB fog light loom through the car as i plan on fitting the ARB Sahara bumper (not bar). i will try to get the factory style switch though.

ordered a scangauge too for the car. how all is well when it arrives.

                  thanks again.

Re: Help with factory fog lights

last week , i spent half day fitting front factory fog lights to my VX, which didn't originaly come with one.
i got a Toyota fog light switch part # 84160-26010, when recieved i noticed that i will need connector and 5 pigtails to that switch ,
factory fog lights for about A$ 90.
                    switch AS 57.
connector and pigtails free from a wrecker.
the idea was use the factory wiring which already exists behind the pumper , put in relay and fuse in the fuse box and then tab in the stalk wiring to get the led indictor on the cluster .
all worked fine but completly failed to make the led indictor on the cluster to work.
so now i'm using it with the external switch in the dash panel .
any confirmation if i changed the stalk , would i get the cluster indicator work?
what is the connector (marked in red )? is it for the cruise control ?
