  • New stereo for Jo's Prado

I had a pretty decent stereo set-up in my old car and decided after a few weeks with the stock set-up in my 06 GXL that it wasn't quite cutting the mustard (I do like my tunes when driving!)

I've replaced the stock head unit with one of these: http://www.pioneer.com.au/en/Product...0P3150DVD.aspx

The stock 6x9" front speakers with a pair of these: http://www.alpine.com.au/products/pr...sp?modelID=316

The stock 6.5" rear speakers with a pair of these: http://www.alpine.com.au/products/pr...sp?modelID=317

Powered by one of these: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_amps.php?amp_id=480

After reading about the difficulties others have encountered in swapping out the stock speakers I wasn't quite brave enough to attempt the install myself (lazy, I know), so had my local JB put it in for me. With a small plastic spacer (supplied by the JB installer) on each side of the double DIN head unit it sits very nicely in place of the stock unit.

The amp sits under the front passenger seat:

The speakers were fitted using MDF brackets. I will take some pictures when I next have the door trim off.

Overall I am thrilled to bits with the upgrade, the factory set-up was not as dismal as that contained in my old car (AU Fairmont) but the new additions have made a massive difference. All up (including the installation costs) it set me back a little over $2K but for something I use and enjoy every day I consider it money well spent :P

I had these same speakers in my Fairmont and did not hesitate to get them again. I did have a sub in my Fairmont, and toyed with the idea of getting one for the Prado but in the end I had limited places to put it (did consider under the driver's seat) and honestly with the new 6x9's in the front I am not left wanting for bass. The head unit has a fantastic iPod interface, once you have connected your iPod you can control it very easily via the touchscreen (iPhone too). It will also play DVDs but so far I have found that a little distracting when driving, the main reason I got a double DIN unit was really just to fill the available space and to connect a reversing camera (yet to be acquired).

tunes are one thing you can't skip in the shopping list.

just out of curiosity, did you ask the JB installers to put a weather/water cover over the back of the speakers?

i considered using MDF and plywood to mount my speakers, but if you do any form of 4wding, or live in a place where it will rain a lot, you will get a lot of water/mud inside the doors via you windows. (take your door trim off and run a hose over the outside of your window, you will see water seep through and down the door)

this is why i went with the aluminium adaptor plates. i'm not worried about the speakers, as they were relatively cheap for their performance. (kevlar cone and rubber surrounds) pics are in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=604

also, when others have their door trims off, just check that the two drain holes at the bottom of the doors are not blocked. this would be a good time to clean them out.
