  • Rear Work Light to AUX Battery - Now with Photos !!

Just installed the Kaymar Rear Work Light and am looking at wiring it in this weekend. I want to connect it to the AUX battery (ARB Dual Battery Setup).

I want to control the light from inside the cabin.

I obviously need a relay. But without a switch current how do I switch the relay? I dont want to use the lights etc. as I want to use the worklight without headlights or maybe even keys in.

Has anybody got a circuit diagram that will help?

I thought about running two wires from the battery, one 4 or 6mm for the worklight and another smaller guage as the switch current.

Ideally I'd like to use a two way (on.off.on) switch and pickup the reverse light current as well. This way I'll have the option of 'Auto' (when reverse is selected) OFF, or ON.

    Thanks

Re: Rear Work Light to AUX Battery

Hi Halojump, simply run one 6mm auto wire from your auxiliary battery’s positive terminal, via a suitably sized fuse at the auxiliary battery.

Get a standard horn or headlight relay and connect the wire coming from your auxiliary battery to terminal 30 on the relay and run another wire from that same terminal to one of the outside terminals on your three way switch.

Run another wire from your reversing lights wire to the other outside terminal on your three way switch.

Next run a wire from the middle terminal of your three way switch back to the relay and connect this wire to terminal 85.

Run a wire from terminal 86 to earth.

Then run a wire from terminal 87 to the positive input of your work lights and earth the negative side of your work lights and your done.

      Hi Halojump,

You could wire it like a normal house two way switch, but you would have to run two
wires, between the switches, and change the switch on the worklight for a double pole
double throw. I didn't want to do this so did the following instead.

      My spec was as follows:

Be able to turn on from inside or outside the car with the ignition key removed.

When turned off inside the car light can't be turned on from outside to stop someone
coming along and turning it on and leaving it going.

Decided the easiest way was simply to wire from the aux to a switch on the dash,
then to the switch on the work light. Only one wire to be run.

I leave the worklight switch on, this allows me to turn the light on and off from inside the car.
When I'm going to be using the light I turn it on inside the car then I can turn it off or on outside
      when I want.

When I'm packing up switch it on outside then off inside.

You don't need a relay if you run normal auto wire as the lamp won't draw much current, assuming
a led lamp or low wattage globe is used.

      Cheers,

Re: Rear Work Light to AUX Battery

Thanks for all the excellent advice. I have drawn up a circuit which I think will probably work.

I have bought a connector block for the rear cabin, as I also want to put in some Auxillary power in the rear.

Does anyone see any problems with my circuit?

Hi halojump, looks fine but depending on the distance form the auxiliary battery and location of the connector block, it would pay you to put a 40 amp circuit breaker as close as practical to the auxiliary batteries positive terminal.

Re: Rear Work Light to AUX Battery

Well I finally got some time to myself on the weekend where Work, Kids, SES etc did not interfere.

I have almost completed the work and will post pictures soon. Basically the circuit is as above with some added features.

I now have two switched (from up front) auxillary power supplies in the rear of the Prado, in adittion to the two way switch on the work light. I also took the opportunity to run in a light guage wire to install a cut out switch for the rear parking sensors. I need to find a Carling switch for this and work out a suitable cut out circuit.

I have completed the work in the drivers area, using Carling switches from Springers @ Lawnton (very helpful 12V specilists http://www.springers.com.au)

I have a junction box which I need to mount somewhere where it will look neat. I may enclose it in a case from Jaycar.

I ended up painting the rear light bracket black so it does not stand out as much.

I'll talke some pictures tomorrow. But here is the circuit as it stands now (the picture is a little large for the board to show properly)

After waking up @ 530 and workig until 830pm I was stuffed (or is it that I am just getting too old to be crawling about :? )

I still have to get the Auxillary Batter system in; I may just end up paying ARB (UV 4x4) to put it in and save the hassle.
