      Re: Safari Snorkle and Performance

One of the recent 4WD Action mags had an article about installing a snorkel on both a 60 and 80 series (I think). I recall they made comment on better fuel economy afterwards but nothing on power increase, but then the two can go hand in hand as you get better power so press the pedal somewhat lighter which results in better economy. They did not do this on a 120 but they did, I believe, run this over a dyno. This was in issue 146, which was the same controversial issue with the great tyre round up

          Re: Safari Snorkle and Performance

A snorkle in theory on a turbocharged Prado should not increase horsepower as too many other factors are involved that hinder the performance benefits from a snorkle - On a NA Prado it potentionally could/should make a difference. Assuming the Snorkle does not pose any intake restrictions, the benefit of the cooler air from outside the vehicle (as opposed to the air from within the engine bay or innerguard) is lost as soon as the air enters the turbo charger heating it to the level it would normally be at without a snorkle. The Intake air temperature is more related by the efficiceny of Intercooler more so than anything in a TD Prado. The "ram air effect" from the vehicle travelling at speed is probably hindered by 1. the restrictive airbox that toyota fits and 2. the relatively small turbo charger - increased performance could still be achiveable but I doubt it. If the turbo was a larger higher flowing unit able to ingress much much more air and the restrictive air box was replaced or removed, then the "ram air effect" becomes highly beneficial. On a NA or V6 Prado the result would completely be different to a TD Prado. On one of my previous turbocharged vehicles running a high flow pod filter and a cold air duct from the front bumper resulted in a bit over 8kw at the engine so benefits can be had from better intake ducting - I haven't had a chance to attempt any testing as I simply haven't had the time and there isn't a 4 wheel Dyno close by.

I found my snorkel improved my economy by around 0.5 litres per 100 kilometres. The only problem was the extra drag it caused then resulted in a loss of around 0.5 litres per hundred kilometres.

That tends to happen when ya dry your undies on it as you drive along
