  • Brake Controller

    Hi
I want to install a HR Brake Controller into my 06. The controller has a wiring loom and I was wondering if it is as simple as plugging it in somewhere - or - do I have to follow the wiring instructions. (as a leccy I make a good carpenter)
    Thanks for any advice.

    Re: Brake Controller

Mate, if it's the basic HR controller without a decel sensor, I'd throw it straight in the bin. I had one for my camper trailer, and could never get the right amount of, nor progressive braking. It's just a very basic unit. It really made towing a chore and very frustrating. I ditched it and bought a Prodigy, and it's fantastic.

Having said that, I had the HR installed professionally, and the installer ran a fairly heavy wire from the battery to a thermal CB, then to the unit. From there the brake wire is reasonably heavy gauge with 2 insulators (probably overkill on his part) right through to the trailer socket.

From memory, there is one wire to ignition +, one from the brake switch, and a ground wire. The Prodigy used exactly the same wiring and was a snack to change over. I fitted it into where the front ashtray used to be.

You can do it yourself, but I'd tend to do it the way the manufacturer recommends.
