  • Instrument cluster freezing/not working on start

My instrument cluster is freezing on shut down, meaning the tacho-fuel gauge-engine temp stay where they were last on shut down. When starting they all go to zero (not reading) and when selecting reverse or forward they come back to life???? Its a 2004 1kzte GXL, any help would be great. Thanks.

No mate, went for a drive b4 and it was all good but still scary when you cant see the engine temp. Will do some trouble shooting tomorrow when my brain it rested, thanks.

Re: Instrument cluster freezing/not working on start

Well, I had a fuse blow (dome light in engine bay) and when I replaced it everything is working fine :?: It has me stumped why a dome light fuse would cause this sort of problem and as I don't have a wiring diagram for the car it's a bit hard to explain. I'm sure someone out there will have this and be able to finger the cause.

Re: Instrument cluster freezing/not working on start

          Hi all,

As you found, the dome fuse also feeds aux power to the instrument cluster.

The reason is the instrument cluster is powered normally by the ignition fuse, this powers the meters, tell tale lights
etc. When you turn off the ignition, power is removed from the instrument cluster as you don't want the tell tails to light
and stay on, ie alt fail, oil pressure fail etc.

With no power on the cluster the gauges can't return to zero (stepper motors drive the needles) thus the dome light circuit
is required to provide auxillary power to the ECU in the instrument cluster so that the gauges can be driven to zero.

          Cheers
