  • Electric Windows Inhibit

Sorry if this question has been asked before - I searched and couldn't find anything, but perhaps my search terms were wrong.
One of my few peeves with the Prado is the way the drivers window controls work - specifically the way the inhibit switch stops both the driver and the passenger/rear from controlling their windows. On my Calais, the driver always has control and the inhibit switch only stops the passenger controls working.

The other day I wanted to put down the passenger side window down so I could talk to someone through it. While I had the windows enabled, the kids put theirs down in the back. Because the control on the doors takes priority, I couldn't put them back up without physically reaching back and pulling the kid's hand away from the control, while at the same time using my control. With 2 kids that was like herding cats. It would be much easier if the driver controls always worked, with the inhibit switch only disabling the passenger controls.
Anyone know if it is possible to rewire it so they work that way?

BTW it's an 03 GXL Petrol.

You should simply have more control over your children.

..my kids would never do anything like that :P :P
I agree with you , but really, it's a very very small nitpick IMO.

It may be a small thing but if it could be "rewired" simply then it would be an improvement. As the parent of a severly intelectually disabled child, i often need to lock the windows with our daughter in the car, she doesnt understand what the button does, but it moves so she plays with it, and i cant tell her not to as she doesnt understand spoken language. Of course this means that i cant operate any window but the drivers, i for one would be interested to know if it could be modified.

I had the controls apart once. It seemed to me to all be controlled by a single electronic board (all surface mount). All I can think of is to unplug the switch on the rear doors. Someone else might know more about it.

I was going to suggest removing the main control on the drivers door, and checking how its all terminated?

          • But as dereki says above, about it being circuit board and surface mount - possibly wasting your time. I suspect by the way the door window switches interface, any modifications to how they interact will probably cause more damage than good. Other than the method described, which doesn't really address what you want, then may not be possible.

Surface mount usually means re-programming an IC or cutting and reconnecting tracks on the PCB itself. I am not recommending this!!!!!

Andrew (Not sure if you were asking or not mate, but this may suit you?)
          • So I'll also agree with dereki about the disconnection of the switches in the rear door. You will maintain full control of the window, the young lady in the back will have no control. And not too hard to restore back to original later on. Only issue would be getting to the connections on the rear door switches... Just remember to secure any wiring even to wrap in the soft foamy stuff to prevent rattles - I would hate to pull apart a door twice...

Only problem I for see with this, is that when the window system looses power, the individual door switches are required to reset the main control with a full down & full up operation. So maybe not as good as it sounds?

You can remove just the panel with the switch on it in the rear. no need to remove the door trim. So its not to hard to plug/ unplug the wiring from the kids switches to disable them.

That being the case then, then disconnection of the switches (or reconnection if the unit requires reset) would be unbelievably easy!!!

                Re: Electric Windows Inhibit

Thanks for the replies - I've had a bit of a look this afternoon, and discovered that it is very easy to remove the panel that holds the switches. That's the good news.

The bad news is that as previously mentioned they have surface mount electronics and custom IC's And here I was thinking it would just be switches. Further bad news is that the suggestion of unplugging the rear switch doesn't work either. Each switch panel holds circuitry which seems to be related to that particular window. So if you unplug one switch, the corresponding switch on the drivers door starts flashing, and won't operate again until the switch is plugged back in and the window controlled a couple of times with that switch.

I haven't given up hope yet, it's just not going to be as easy as I hoped. At this stage I'm thinking something along the lines of finding the wires to the motors, and routing them through a relay controlled by a switch on the dash, so the switch on the door _thinks_ it is connected.

Yes having control of my kids is the other alternative - if anyone can offer real practical help in that department I'd love to hear from you. Perhaps 3M part # 8979 might be of help.

All problems relating to motor cars can be solved with 2 things

                  1. if it should move but doesn't use WD40
                  2. if it moves but shouldn't use duct tape.

                  No. 2 should help

Sounds like i will put this one back in the too hard basket. It's not a big deal but an easy fix would have been nice.

                  Cheers Andrew

                    Re: Electric Windows Inhibit

As silly as the duct tape sounds, I wonder if you could find (or get someone to shape) some piece of plastic or fibreglass etc to fit over the whole panel in the back to hands can't get to the switch at all? I don't think this would be too hard to do and possibly a lot easier than dealing with the electronics issues.

                      Re: Electric Windows Inhibit

Similarly to a child lock on the doors, maybe you guys could fashion up some kind of child lock on the electric window switch and wire it back to a separate switch near the driver's side panel.
