  • ABS and (!) Handbrake light on, no error logged?

I was at a very wet and muddy loveday a couple of weekends ago, we must have been the only ones crazy enough to go up as the only other vehicle down there decided to camp only!
Anyhow, after a muddy day out, with mirrors and windows caked which prevented me seeing anything at the rear of the vehicle, I reversed back into spot at camp with the aid of a spotter who failed to see a wombat/rabbit/hare hole and I dropped the right rear wheel straight into it - about a metre deep!
Anyhow, it rested on the right rear axle and the front drivers side was about 50cms in the air. Got out of that, but noticed that the ABS and brake light came on shortly after. Hopped out and checked everything both front and back and couldn't see any signs of damage behind the wheels. It stayed on for about 100m or so, and after a few gentle brakes here and there came good again - no further signs of error.

Now interestingly, I expected this error log to the rigs computer, but when I scanned with the scangauge it showed as nothing found. I have never (according to scanguage) had an error logged so truly don't know if it is reading it right (next weeks job to find the handbook again). All the other sensors are working OK though. Can anyone tell me if this should have registered on the rigs computer?

The next day we were on some seriously slippery mud/clay and the ABS got a bit of a work out, and seems to be working OK. I will get Toyo to see if they see it come up on their computer at the next service.

Jase, I had the same showing on my dash about 18 months back. It indicates that your ABS system has failed. For me once this triggered it would remain in place untilk the ECU recycled but turning the key back to accessories and then restarting. This would then test the ABS system to see if it was currently failed.

Things to check would be the speed sensors on the wheels, especially the one that dropped into the hole. Check both the sensor and wiring as it could be something has been damaged. There are four sensors and all should be reporting the same speed (within tollerance) back to the ABS acctuator.

Here is a link to the thread that I was using (along with others)
Parking brake and ABS lights on

Here is a thread that MickL posted in regards to reading error codes. It is listed as 1KZ-TE in title but includes D4D:

Ahh, it seems that handbrake <> parkbrake when it comes to searching!

Thanks Nick, Ill give Mick's method a run to see what comes up. I had never seen these combination of lights appear either before or since, so I expect that it is related to the 'hole' incident

Also, the lights appeared after levelling the car back out and disappeared shortly after whilst engine was still running (ie no reset of ECU).

      thanks for the info

I have had this happen when using the Prado on some of the rally stages as an officials vehicle. Found that the rear sensors (abs) where freaking out with the amount of mud/ rocks that were getting into the rims and hub area.

Cleaned out and all good since.. Maybe this is similar? Or a wombat was pissy with you and chewed thru the cables

I had the same issue when we submarined the Prado in Nolans brook earlier this year ops: , it rectified its self in a couple of days, my research however pointed to a connection under LHS Middle row seat (under carpet) moisture in here causes a problem. something to look at maybe. We went through Dozens of other very deep water crossings and didn't have an issue until we got the inside wet.

          Cheers Andrew

            bit late i know,
but the abs will only hold an error if the light remains on.
it will clear itself if the light goes out.

Still should have logged a fault code right? I thought the scanguage should pick it up like a "history", even though the condition is not currently active?

Either that or sabotage from one of the mitsi or datsun owners that were there

When I had issues the first place (bunch of swamppys that like Black, White and Teal) couldn't find any error codes. Probably the apprentice cleared them out but the second place I took it too (and continue to go to) found a heap of errors and was able to use these to fix the issue I had. More than likely a very different issue to yours as mine "seemed" to be a fault in the power into the ABS acctuator as approsed to the accutator speed sensors or the wiring between the speed sensors and acctuator.

it would have logged an issue, but once it fixed itself, data is gone
                    (in your example).
