When filling my fuel tanks, I fill right to the brim. Go for a short drive up and down a steep hill and then come back and top up the tanks again. When the fuel reaches the top of the filler pipe I put the cap on and that's it. This second fill up generally takes about 3 litres. This time I watched the fuel slowly sink down the filler pipe and then I would top up again. I did this a number of times and ended up putting in an extra 12 litres. Instead of having 180 litres in the tanks when I filled them, I only had a max. of 168 litres. Has any one else had this problem or check that they have the same problem.\

Well, I don't usually go to that extent, but I do fill to the brim at each fill. I can usually guesstimate how many litres will fit, once I was within 200mls...
I watch the KM's and the fuel gauge (and sometimes the orange fuel light )
I am satisfied I run the full 180 litres, orange light comes on, I can get about 165l in....D4D Prado GXL - 2014. 2" OME lift, ARB Deluxe Winch bar, ARB under body protection plates, ARB EZ Deflator, Weaco fridge, Matsen fridge on slide, BFG A/T's, ARB CKMA12 compressor, Oztrail side awning with LED lights PLUS canvas extension, Lightforce XGT's.. As I am filling I usually rock the car side to side a few times to let the air out of the tanks and have found I can get about another 6 litres in. Then fill to the brim.
Works for me. There is a small tube on the side of the filler tube that spurts fuel down the filler tube when I do this. Not sure what this does but must be letting airlocks out of somewhere in the system.[b]2013 GXL LC200 TTV8[/b]

Not sure why you go to such lengths. It's always good to let the fuel settle after a long run as some air will get caught up in the tank. And I understand it the filler pipe length is not taken into account when determining fuel tank capacity. So, sure, you could get more fuel by absolutely filling to the brim. But with 180L tank (or 150L if you were unfortunate enough to get a more recent model :lol: :lol: ) as standard, do you really need a few more litres extra?[B][SIZE=4]ntp

Go into Caltex Woolies and put the fuel nozzle into the filler pipe. They've removed the lock-out catch so I jam the cap into the handle. As the tank fills, I grab the window washer and clean the screens. Gorilla comes running out of the servo, grabs the nozzle and pulls it out of the car and shoves it back into the bowser. "You're not allowed to leave it un-attended" he screams at me. "You are not allowed to jam the mechanism" he also shouts. "The fuel could spill out onto the pavement and catch fire" he says.
I asked where was the sign that says all this? He says "Company rules." I said "But isn't the mechanism supposed to cut out when the fuel reaches back up to the nozzle?"
I go to Perth, Caltex Woolies, put the nozzle into the tank and discover that it still has the lock-out feature. I lock it on and proceed to wash the windows. It clicks off by itself as it should. No complaints or ranting by the attendant.

Yeah, I've had a guy at Shell, turn the pumps off on me while I was filling the tanks, he said some rubbish about I need to be holding the filler.
I turned to his boss and said, there's 160 litres of diesel every week I wont be buying here anymore. Don't think that kids works there anymore...

There's also a little sign that says "Do not return to vehicle while re-fuelling" which I take means that if you are filling the car, and the missus goes into the shop to buy a cool drink she must not then return to the car whilst you are still filling it with juice in case she introduces the static charge that will blow you, her, the car and the servo into a blazing fireball.
So, if you are filling the car and you lock the nozzle down, walk off to fetch the window washer from the next bowser across then you are not supposed then to return to your car. So how do you remove the nozzle and drive off then?
And finally, surely if there is some real hazard with locking the nozzle on then why haven't they disabled the feature on all the high-flow pumps that the truckies use? Try holding the trigger down for 1500 litres at a time!Dave

Police would not get involved in a matter like this. Diesel's flash point is a lot higher than petrol but at the end of the day they can ban you from refueling at their servo if you don't abide by their rules. Its no different than a shop...Winston.

Hey I can understand no 'lock on' for petrol nozzles, for petrol drivers need all the help they can get!!!! us diesel dudes know diesel won't explode, and almost impossible to set a spill on fire, but at $1.40 a litre who is stupid enough to spill a drop anyway. I carry a flat head 40mm nail. Works nicely in most DIESEL nozzles. Never been yelled at. I also know a few outlets that have retained the lock on their diesel pumps, they get my business. PWC
