    Re: ctek d250s charger

    Hi Johno

I was looking at one of these to get around the low voltage problem with my auxiliary battery. I emailed the Australian distributor (Baintech) to see if it was rated for under bonnet installation. Their reply was a definite no.
I ended up installing the Redarc BCDC unit as it is rated for under the bonnet. It fitted nicely on the internal guard sheetmetal just behind the right headlight, right beside the aux battery. I used some spacers under a couple of the mounting points to even things up. I've got it mounted so that the lights are facing up so I can see them when I look down beside the battery. My battery tray is the Piranna which gives a bit of a gap between the battery and the guard

    Cheers
    Andrew

      thanks andrew
just looked the charger up on the net . looks like it will do the job. does the charger turn off before the main battery drains down. or do you have to have an isolater between the main and the charger. is your charger the bcdc 1220.
      thanks again

        Re: ctek d250s charger

Yes, my unit is a BCDC 1220.
One of the connections is to a switched power supply to sense when the ignition is on. It'll only charge the auxiliary while that is on. It won't drain the main battery unless you leave the ignition on for a long time without the engine running.

          Re: ctek d250s charger

          Hi Andrew + Jonno

I've got Ctek d250s installed in the engine bay (where the 2nd battery is supposed to sit, I'm using an ARB tray to hold the aux battery and planning to fit a compressor next to the charger).

As far as I know Ctekd250s are design to fit under the bonnet. They are IP55 or IP56 rated hence dust/water proof. I've had it installed for over 3 months now and the hot Perth summer + engine bay temps don't seem to cause any issues either. Check out some other people's installs (some over a year or two ago) and these seem to hold up quite well. They are $100 - $150 cheaper than redarc too

          Edit: IP65 rated

            Re: ctek d250s charger

I've got my 250 installed in the back but it should be OK in engine bay if mounted up front where pjorek has it where it can get plenty of air movement. There's no mention of engine bay restrictions in the manual. It comes with a battery temperature sensor with a long lead. It senses the voltage from main battery, when it gets above 13.4v (engine running) it charges aux battery. When voltage drops below 12.8v (engine off) it stops charging. Simple. No need for an isolator, just a 30 amp inline fuse for safety. If you get a voltage reading below 12.8v at the Ctek with engine running (wait 1 minute after starting engine) then you need to use thicker cable. I used 6 b&s for the long run to the back.

            Cheers

              Re: ctek d250s charger

              Hi guys

Just thought for clarity I would post the actual reply to my question on whether the Ctek was rated for under bonnet fitting in a common rail diesel. Here it is:

              Hello Andrew,

Thank you for contacting Bainbridge Technologies and for your interest in the NEW! CTEK D250s DC-DC Battery Charger.

Answer: No is not recommended to mount in the engine bay at all.

I have seen that some people have successfully fitted the unit under the bonnet and it's great to see the unit is surviving. Given the advice from Bainbridge, I just wouldn't be game for a long term solution. It's a great unit. That's why I was looking at buying one. If I was fitting one I'd be fitting it inside the cabin.

Regarding price, I found that the Redarc was full price at several places, but much much cheaper at others. In the end the price difference was not very big and I had the confidence of an underbonnet solution that I could have confidence in.

Hi pjorek, how is the ctek holding up in the engine bay, no issues to report?

BCDC1220's don't need to be hooked up to the ignition. They'll cut out when the main battery voltage drops to 12.7V. There is a version that is triggered by the ignition signal.

BCDC1220's are around $300 delivered on Ebay.

No issues at all. Another summer with cold beer in the fridge!

The battery stays well charged too (above 12.6V when the engine is switched off). I only had to top it up once or twice. Seeing you are in WA, you are welcome to have a look at the setup.

I found that using 8 B&S cable wasn't maintaining the 12.8v min required to keep the Ctek switched on even with Leighw's diode so I replaced it with the thicker 6 B&S, problem solved.

                        Hi there Roo

I am planning the CTEK 250 Dual install in my engine bay as well so am appreciative of your feedback. As you say with the solar panel input I think they are a better option. I am getting a Korr Lighting 165W folding solar panel so I can use it on the car batts (anderson connector to the CTEK) or my camper trailer batts. Just not sure if I can leave the camper connected to the Prado and have the solar panel connected to the CTEK and have the whole aux system charged? (after the main batt is charged by CTEK first)

                        Cheers
