  • Caterpillar Water Separator - The Full Story

Hey all, some of you may have seen my post on this in the other thread but instead of totally hijacking PeteS thread I though I would start this one.
I have recently come to the realisation that installing a water seperator on the common rail diesel engine is one of the best insurance policies I could do so safe guard against the possibility of getting a bad batch of water contaminated fuel. I have heard several bad stories on this from several peopple that have either had this happen to them or know of someone who has had problems.
To reiterate I installed a Caterpiller water seperator as used on their smaller machines in my 120 series after seeing one of my customers being what I would call ripped off, having paid over 3 times more to have fitted what turned out to be exactly the same unit.
Hopefully the following will help some others if undecided on what to do and how to proceed..........

Re: Caterpillar Water Seperator - The Full Story

    I'll start with copying across my install as shown in PeteS post;

Ok guys here is the low down on my install.
The picture below shows the Caterpillar water seperator as sold over the shelf.

To install this you will require two blanking plugs with o-rings for two of the four

available ports. These can also be purchased through Cat. As for the banjo fitings I had a

hard time finding something as I needed 10mm for the Prado where as Cat only supply an 8mm

barb. I suppose all the fuel line on what Cat machines these are installed on all have 8mm

    line.
I found a local company that could supply these. The brand is Bare-co but just make sure you

also acquire the appropriate copper washers for fitting as these did not come with.
With the above, a short length of 3/8" fuel line and some hose clamps it took me less than

half an hour to install this on my 120 series. The best thing was that the mount holes line

up with two of the holes found on the inner guard right beside the factory filter. I did not

have to make any special bracket or anything. Just two 8mm bolts are all that's needed.
Below shows the completed install. After a quick bleed using the factory primer pump she

fired straight up and have had no issues what so ever.

Since my last post I have now sold another eight of these for various vehicles. So far I

have not heard of any problems.
Hopefully this helps others looking for a great high quality product for a fraction of the

cost of what I have seen others go for.
If anyone want's let me know and I will post up what part numbers for the above I can. I

have all these listed at work so don't have access right now.

    Good luck to all
Next we move onto the parts required.....

Re: Caterpillar Water Seperator - The Full Story

Below I have listed the required parts and part numbers were applicable to allow everyone to purchase everything needed to fit this setup to their 120 series just as I have above.

      Caterpillar Parts;
      1 x Fuel/Water Seperator Assy - 144-9962
2 x plugs required to blank two of the four ports on above assy - 3K-8460
      2 x O-rings to seal above plugs - 1J-9671
      4 x 10mm fuel hose clamps - 1P-4278
      2 x 8mm mounting bolts - 8T7547
      2 x Washers - 5P-4116
      2 x Lockwashers - 3B-4505

      The 10mm Banjo fittings are from a company called Bare-Co, part numbers as follows;
      2 x 10mm barbed Banjo fitting - B1873
      2 x Banjo bolt - B1874
4 x copper washers to suit above
approx 1 meter of 3/8" fuel hose.

This is everything needed that I have put together. All up you should be able to source all the above parts for under $200. A quick calculation was around $180 or even cheaper if you're friendly with your local Cat dealer

If I have forgotten anything or anyone needs more info then let me know and I'll be happy to help out.
Thanks for reading and good luck with your installation!

Re: Caterpillar Water Seperator - The Full Story

Thanks Bazooka, I have been looking at adding a water seperator filter for a while, been following all the threads. given my ability to access Cat parts cheap and the confidence i have in the quality of their gear i reckon i might follow your lead.

Does the assembly come with a filter or does the filter have a seperate part no.

        Cheers Andrew

The assembly 144-9962 is sold exactly as in my above pic so yes it comes with the filter. If you cannot make it out in the pic the replacement filter number is 156-1200. These are only $15-20 off the shelf.

Just to add some information on the topic. I was once told that the OEM fuel filters are only required to have 50% efficiency. The CAT filters are rated to 98% efficiency.

this raises a question for me. if the fuel really is the problem with the injectors, is it the fuel suppliers problem or is it still toyos due to part selection for aus market, ie injectors & poor efficency filters?

im sure as hell not paying the $5k they are wanting to fix the problem they have caused not me.

Glad I could help you out 8608
To mount is easy as pie. If you got the bolts and washers I listed above then you can bolt this in beside the OEM filter using the two existing holes found in the inner guard. There is no modification or custom brackets needed at all to mount this.
It took me less than half an hour to mount mine. Just remember the two rear ports on the filter assembly are the fuel in and the front two ports are fuel out. There are small arrows on the housing showing the flow direction under each port.
I had to use the two ports on the one side as shown in my install pic as the banjo fittings would foul on the OEM filter base in this position.

For those interested I'm in the process of fitting one of these to my 150 D4D. It should bolt straight in like the 120, I will confirm after I move some electrics I have fitted in said location.

I had trouble finding a supplier of Banjo fittings and after some thought I felt I'd be better off with AN fittings as they should be less restrictive and their also much easier to get.

Here's the Speed Flow part numbers to help you acquire them if you wish:

                            703 06 ADAPT -6/ 1/2-20 M ALUM STR x 2, and
                            403 06 H/END -6 90DEG PUSH ON x2.

                            Should cost about $80.

Let me know how you mount it as I have the same setup as you with the ARB battery tray there but with a battery in it
It would be very tight next to the arb tray.
