  • Buying my first Snorkel > advice/info please!

    Hi folks,

I am on the market for a snorkel but i have no idea what to watch out for etc. I am aware that a safari snorkel will set me back about $460 off ebay and there are some cheaper ones like airflow or something which are about $250-$280 and then there the no brand types which are about $170 odd. I don't really want to spend $460 as i am only a student. Please let me know what's good, what i should stay away from and prices etc?

    Thanks,
    AB

I'm only new to Prados myself, so will let the more experienced guys comment but have heard that some of cheap ones will have problems with UV breaking down the plastic. Also interesting to note that Safari list theirs as fitting 90 series Prado 3.4 from 12/97 on. Wonder what the differences are (if any) with the earlier ones. Mine is a 5/97 3.4 Petrol.

Steer clear of the cheap ones, only ever buy Safari or AirTec Snorkels, forget about ebay as well, what you get on ebay are not bargins, you are better off going to a 4wd accessory shop and getting one from there, most will quote about $450 to $500 fitted. Now unless you want to drill holes in your pride and joy, then I would suggest getting them to fit it.

Ok thanks folks, appreciate the advice. I'm thinking the best option now is to save up for a safari and get ARB to fit it.

The Prado's V6 petrol engine is very water proof, as long as you can can keep the air going to it, it will perform in water just like the diesel engine. Yes a Petrol engine does not need as much air as a diesel engine, but you never know just how much air is left for the engine to use without the snorkel

Be careful with the Safari snorkels. I am unfamiliar with the petrol versions on the 95 series however I do have a Safari fitted to my Diesel 95. The actual snorkel is excellent but the pipework supplied inside the guard is rubbish - totally not waterproof.

Do some searching on here and you will find evidence to back this up. I know Steve M has some stories to tell re his fitment by a "reputable" 4x4 store.

I turfed the supplied pipework and made my own out of exhaust tubing and modified the airbox accordingly.

Nothing wrong with the watertightness of the pipe work on Safari Snorkels, that would have been the installer who ballsed that up, all pipework MUST be sealed with a sealant, either silicon, or sikaflex.

                          Croozza,

                          I will clarify,

I fitted the snorkel myself. I am a mechanic. I was not happy with the watertightness of the setup. The bits Safari supply are not so bad (far from ideal though) but then they rely on the OEM ducting between the Safari ducting and the airbox. The OEM ducting simply butts together (3 sections) and is sealed with a flimsy piece of foam. Even with sealant the watertightness of this arrangement would have been questionable. Anyone who has fitted a Safari to a 95 Diesel would agree. As i said previously do a search on here or LCOOL and you will find numerous reworks.

Given the price tag of the Safari I would have expected more.

I will go on to say Safari generally do make a good product - I have used them before with no problems.

I've heard on the cheap one's they might collapse because of the suction when you floor your vehicle. Thus reducing air intake. Well that's what I have heard... never seen it myself.

I've been in a V6 trying to follow a diesel and stalled, Safari snorkel and all, just the truth of it. If you are going to do a lot of water crossings then the diesel engine is the go, plain and simple.

The 5VZ-FE motor is very good in the water proof department, I have had water over the bonnet many times without one single hic up, cough or splutter, you just have to make sure the electrics are in good nick with regular servicing, and preventive maintenance. look after your baby, and it will look after you.
