    Hi ALL

I'd like to get feedback from anyone that has one of these units. Please I'm not into a religious discussion about different charging methods as I can see some have gotten heated.

I was contemplating using one of these instead of the REDARC isolator (which I currently have). After just replacing a 2nd battery that was just 15 months old, I'd like to get a little more life out of the "dualie".

I note they operate ok to 55c but then current output decreases up to 80c. They say you can mount them under the bonnet, I am still a little suspect unless you build some soft of heat shield ? I could mount it near the LH wheel arch and have an aluminium shield bent up and then get some thermal material that they use under bonnets to shield it but it would still get friggin hot under there....

    Any thoughts ?

Ta Pete in Alice (warming up and going to be seriously toasty soon)

Not to hijack the thread, but just wondering about a few more details on your second battery - did you manage to have the 2nd battery replaced under warranty? What type of battery was it? And what model/motor do you have in your Prado? Sorry for all the Qs!

From memory, they recommend you mount them behind one of the headlights to benefit from
      max cooling effect.

A friend has one, it seems to work ok.

      Cheers

Battery was 14 months old, warranty is only 12 months. It was a Supercharge 105Amp deep cycle battery that had never been put on an external charger, was only ever fed by a Redarc isolator. Motor is a 2004 (pre-d4d) 3L turbo diesel.

Must say the more I've read the more I think the "offroad products industry" has simplified the "toughening up" of 4 wheel drives to make it easy for the masses. By this I mean the average person that has 4 weeks holiday, pulls his/her trailer up to a van park on the coast or maybe even head out into the "outback" maybe once during the life of the vehicle. Probably a little unfair however I was one of those till I moved to Alice Springs. What I've found is that most stuff I bought on the east coast I've thrown in the bin and replaced with "branded" products that are able to perform in an more consistant manner...

The temps out in Alice will hover in the 40s for months at a time and I think this added to my sealed batteries demise. I know these things arent fully sealed as they vent however I've opted for a battery that you can still top up when needed (marine). The Redarc is fine if you do the occasional trip and then put the battery onto a charger as soon as you get back, I'm sure it will be fine. I know batteries and charging have become almost "religious" on the forums and I've read LeighW's stuff with real interest, the diode device does make sense.....

Though in saying that I'll probably stick my neck out and try a DC-DC C-Teck charger. I do like the Redarc, the construction looks great as its in an Alu body which should help disipate the heat but I like the Ctek as its rated to take a water jet blast and the cabling points are easy with lugs.

All interesting stuff, its what makes the world go round :-)

          Thanks Leigh

Makes sense to try and get the airflow across the unit. I had a look at a couple of youtube videos and did have a chuckle. Some of the DC-DC chargers were mounted on the side of the wheel arch in direct view of the motor (exhaust side). Again to my point above, if you drive it within say 150km of the coast all the time it will probably fare well. If your equidistant to every beach in Australia (the Alice) the temps tend to rise and you seriously need to think about getting equipment that can take a serious pounding and withstand extreme temps....

After splurging on a decent second battery, a C-Tek will be next on the list to look after it, but I'm not going to hard wire it. Although this relies on me remembering to hook it up, which is definitely a hit n miss affair, at least I will be able to use it on my primary battery and to keep the wife topped up too. Her car battery that is...
