  • Dual Battery Install

    Hi all,

Finished the installation of my GPS/DVD from Dig Options - electrically no problems, mechanically a PITA! Still, all done now - just need to to work out how to use it.

My next project is the installation of a second battery. I have done some research, and looked at what info there is available, and I'm thinking of going with the ARB / Redarc SBI combo. As I understand it this installs on the drivers side behind the headlight (is there an alternative to mount it behind the existing battery?).

I understand that there have been some problems in the past with support / cracking of the wheel arch, but it appears these have been resolved with additional bracing.

    My questions are as follows:

    1. Has anyone else successfully installed this combination, and if so, how did it go?

    2. Will it take an Optima yellow top?

    3. What is involved in switching over all accessory power to the second battery?

    Thanks

Ok, thanks for that. Is it the Piranha tray that is on the driver's side? Any preference?

To me I like the idea of one each side, but I'm not sure why...maybe because I am a Libran, and like balance!

Mine is installed behind the driver's side headlight and I have had no problems at all. Only last week I had a Optima Blue Top D27M put in there - time will tell to see how it performs.

I prefer the ARB tray as it leaves the space behind the headlight for other accessories and the heavy battery wires are shorter and aren't across the front of the vehicle.

            Hi All,

I have just been to Piranha OffRoad in Bayswater, Vic to get a quote as they are going to to install my Dual Battery System.
            The system is as follows:

Battery Tray - OffRoad Down Under
            Redarc DC-DC 1220 Isolator
Battery - Exide Stowaway Leisure Cycle ST27DC95 (Cal/Cal 95A/hr) as I have now installed 2 x same battery on Camper.
            The Battery weighs approx 21kgs.
            Piranha Battery Monitor - DBM3D

They will also connect to the Aux battery to several points.

They weren't happy to put the battery behind the drivers headlight, given the weight of the battery, as they were worried about the Cracking / guard damage issue on the Prados.

My question is, is it better to install it on the Passenger side near the Fuel pump (I think) or what should I do?

If I do install on Passenger side, is it better then to install the ARB Compressor behind the Drivers Headlight?

            Please advise

I've installed both battery trays. Both are very strong. Decided to put the battery on the drivers side as I wanted a full size battery. The passenger side only allows for a smaller size. I went with the piranha tray and an allrounder. I then put the compressor in the arb tray. I got abr isolator and monitor but if my budget was bigger I would of gone redarc with tjm monitor... My car was an ex arb demo car that had been thrashed and with 250,000 km has no signs of cracked wheel arches... They too had both trays in and took them out prior to me purchasing.
