  • Engine Bay clean

Got lots of mud after yesterday's run which i need to clean up a bit as I cannot see the engine with the d4d what's the best way to go about it? brush and hose?

do i need to cover up any electronics in plastic?

High pressure hose and water! Nossle no closer than 300mm from components, avoid direct jets onto electrical relays, sensors, cover any diff breathers with plastic bag, avoid fuse box.

i do mine while the engine is running, even sent water through the alternator to wash the mud out from inside it. although, i wouldn't recommend it, it can be done!

I use a weed sprayer with a strong mix of CT18 and water. Cover everything and leave for 15-20 minutes. Hose off gently and you have a shiny engine bay.

When you say cover everything... is it ok on the paintwork?

It's fine on paint work. Wouldn't leave it on there for an excessive amount of time though.

The 15-20 minutes would be OK then by the sounds of things :-)

I'm presuming ct18 gets rid off mud stains as well, i hosed it off but the stains remain and really CBF wiping it with anything. If ct18 gets rid off it then it might be the way to go

                  yeah, ct 18 is great.

all the chemtech products are actually, their handwash and degreaser etc. and they sell in 20L drums which is even better.

For stubborn mud stains you may want to give it a brush with a soft bristle brush

I've always used a mix of Dynamo washing machine liquid and very warm water in a quality spray bottle. Cover everything under the engine bay in it and leave it to sit for 5 to 10 mins with the bonnet down. When you hose it off it'll leave everything glistening and shiny. I'll have to try the CT-18 sometime though. I've found the Supercheap Export Degreaser to be 98.9% crap at doing what it's supposed to. It's great for getting a campfire roaring in no time though.

If anyone is chasing CT-18, Repco currently has it for 40% off. 5L for $20. It looks cheap enough for me. I'm not sure what other places sell it for. Never used the stuff before, so thought I'd better try it based on the recommendations here. The CT-20 is $25 for 5L.

I got it for $63 for 25L last time. but for 5L that sounds like a good price.

I might give the CT-18 a go as well, just returned from a week in the Flinders/Gammon Ranges and Lake Eyre last night and with a bit of rain on the tracks I can hardly see the engine.
