  • Clogged Sump Oil Pickup

Friend told me last night that he has been rebuilding a Prado TD motor that had spun a bearing. When he started to investigate he found the mesh strainer on the oil pickup in the sump to be clogged. The owner had only serviced the Prado every 10,000 klms. His investigation revealed that this is a common issue with Prado's that are not serviced regularly enough. Don't know if it is a 1Kz motor or D4D however next oil change I will be pulling the sump off to clean the oil pick up. Mine is regularly changed at 5000 klms however it has done 225000klms so reckon this small job sounds like a very good idea. Anyone else heard of this issue?

Toyota service schedule states 10000KM for the D4D, if you talk to the dealer
they say 5000KM for vehiles operated under harsh conditions. They Toyota dealer
I sometimes use also uses a flush.

My non Toyota service centre, a highly respected service operation recommends
that the D4D have oil changes at 5000KM, they also put a flush through it. When I
check the oil after the service it is clean.

I myself agree as the oil does get dirty at 5000KM's but not prepared to pay for 5000KM
servicing so I change the oil and filter myself at 5000KM's and get the car serviced at
    10000Km's intervals.

    Cheers

My 120 series was originally a toyota management vehicle and was serviced every 10k.

It would be interesting to know if the vehicle concerned had proof that it had been serviced every 10k. The only reason it should get clogged is if the oil has gone sludgy like the old 3L diesels used to.

        G'Day Wayne,
I have heard of this happening before and completely ceasing the engine. I quickly concluded it was due to poor servicing rather than a Toyota design fault. It has been great motivation to religiously change my oil and filter at or before 5000km. I am very interested in what you find when you remove your sump and would appreciate it if you could post your finding on this thread. Thanks Matt

Will do. The Prado being rebuilt had only done 114,000 klms which is not much work. I agree, great motivation

I'm assuming it must have been mentioned somewhere else on this site because you tend to cover everything and more we see on European forums, but you know of the issue with injector seals causing this?

Toyota UK, and I think at least Denmark (Ireland did a recall last year) are currently recalling D4D engines made between about 2004 and 2007 to change copper injector seals for aluminium. Theory is exhaust gas passes the seal and causes the oil to thicken giving rise to the blocked pick up. Mine was at the dealer for a recall last week and had exactly this. They replace the seals, noticed the old ones had carbon deposits so dropped my sump to reveal a nearly clogged pick up. Seal change is supposed to correct this, but I'll still drop my sump in about 20K miles to check.

I notice as usual Toyota makes up service intervals for different markets. It's every 10K miles to change oil here (about 16K km?). On my LC90 oil was every 9K miles where I think in Oz it was 9K km.

Done some research into this, and it is caused by cheap engine oil flush, the scale (sludge) drops to the sump and the oil pick up sucks it up and clogs up. This can also be done if they drive with the flush in the oil before a service, (So never drive your vehicle with engine flush in it, only let it idle).

I just got my injectors done at 150,000 kms in my d4d and the inlet manifold and egr was pretty well blocked (got cleaned), now the diesel injection place recommended me to put a flush through the engine.

I've done alot of reading and im confused, will this likely just send chunks into the sump and block the pickup or will it resolve the crap blocking the pickup screen?

Also the bottle said run for minimum of 15mins at idle and up to 24hrs, any recommendations?

                Cheers
                Brad

The flush dissolves the goop. No problems with it exacerbating the build up.

Christ Brad no wonder your confused, ""Also the bottle said run for minimum of 15mins at idle and up to 24hrs"" that's a bloody big variance in time. Don't think I would like to have my diesel vehicle idling for 24 hours, would do just as much damage......Cheers Steve

I didn't read that bit about the idling time. 15 minutes that is all you need. Then drop the oil, don't drive it just idle.

Yeh that's what it say's on the bottle, but yeh I'll run it for the 15 min and i bought a inspection camera so i can have a look at it once i drop the oil just to make sure. The injectors that came out were really carbon'd up and ill post up some pics of egr and inlet manifold in another section later.

I've owned the prado since 120,000 and will keep up the 5,000km service intervals now but as i have no idea on the history before that im just trying to catch up on a few maintenance issues.

                        Cheers

Did the flush and bought a bulant camera, but i can't tell if the pickup screen is blocked or not with the camera, all i can see is the mesh on the strainer and its all black around it

I'm not upto date on this issue but I would presume if you can see the shiny mesh then it's not blocked ?? If it was blocked the crap would be over the mesh so would be black and not shiney silver ?? .... Cheers Steve

I'll get a pic if i can and post it up

Would blowing air up the sump be a bad idea to clear it out, im not sure if all i can see is just the black oil residue on the pickup screen
