  • Dual battery not charging

    hi All,

I have just had installed a Redarc bcdc20 dc-dc charger and everything seemed to be working fine! i then installed my Waeco wiring kit directly to the 2nd battery and now after 4 days of general driving the 2nd battery has gone flat..

My question here is does any one know of why this might be happening? the charge status on the dc-dc charger is not displaying anything eg. float, absorption or boost. but does display what type of battery it is!!

    any knowledge appreciated..

    Cheers.

Any chance you could post a wiring diagram of how you actually connected everything up?
    Some photos might also help...

My fairly new battery switch just stopped working a while ago with same result, so maybe a fault in the charger.

          No diagram

I didn't actully wire it an auto elec did. but i am pretty sure the wires go like this

          RED - main battery

BLACK - negative terminal (second battery)

BLUE - "ignition" (aparently, i can not see where it leads to as it is under the dash)

BROWN - posotive terminal (second battery)

          ORANGE - not connected

As i said before it has current, (AGM/GEL lightis flashing) but nothing in the charging status!!

It is such a butchered job done by a "professional marine/ARB dealer. I am tempted to re do the whole thing from scratch so i know whats happening.. The only reason i did not do it in the first place was because if anything was to go wrong ie. fire i would not be to blame..

Thanks for your time once again

              Thanks Matt01,

I read there and yes it seems you are right! The battery type is flashing once per second so it must be in stand by current mode..

Now we have this figured out what are the processes to get it start charging my second battery again?

Thanking you again for your knowledge and time!

Well, the first thing to check would be the fuses in the red wire and the brown wire.
If the fuses are ok, do the following checks and record the values with a digital multimeter.
                1. check the voltage between the red and black wires at the BCDC. (Car running)
                2. check the voltage between the brown and black wires at the BCDC. (Car running)
                3. check the voltage between the blue and black wires at the BCDC. (Car running)
                4. check the voltage across the auxillary battery at the battery terminals. (Car running)
                5. check the voltage between the red and black wires at the BCDC. (Car not running)
                6. check the voltage between the brown and black wires at the BCDC. (Car not running)
                7. check the voltage between the blue and black wires at the BCDC. (Car not running)
                8. check the voltage across the auxillary battery at the battery terminals. (Car not running)
                9. Is the negative terminal of the aux battery connected to the chassis or directly to the main battery negative, or both???
                10. Is the black wire connected to the earth or negative??
                11. Is the orange wire connected to positive, negative or not connected????
