  • Alternator Dead - Water Crossing

    Hi Guys,

    Any clues as to fixing a dead alternator after a deep and muddy water crossing, I tried hosing it out and leaving it overnight and next (hot) day but the battery lamp is still the on with the engine running.

    Has anyone tried those mobile mechanics?

    Pop your bonnet and on the right hand side next to the battery is the fuse box.

    Remove the lid and the second fuse (7.5 amp) from the left is for the alternator active supply.. Check that is not blown!

      I did have a good look in the fuse box, don't recall the 7.5A one you mention - the main 30A is okay, which is the output and the 7.5 must be for the field windings?

      I'll have a closer look before I look at replacing the alternator!

        Gday BusterOz

        Where the 30amp fuse is (Slow blow fuse) if you look to the right of that fuse there is a row of small spade fuses.

        The first small spade fuse is a 7.5amp fuse (Brown).

        If you look on the fuse box lid on the inside it is labeled as "7.5 ALT-S).

        Also! if you look above that 30amp (Slow blow fuse) - (top left) you will see where the main battery supply comes into the fuse box (10mm nut).... Next to that is a 140amp (slow blow fuse) which is also for the alternator (I believe this will be ok!) but there is two spare fuses above and below this fuse. (usually a 10 & 15amp small spade).

        Try the spare 10amp where the 7.5amp is supposed to be if no spare 7.5amp fuses.

          The 7.5A is for voltage sensing, if you went through fresh water it is unlikely any fuses would
          have blown. The regulator is waterproof so also unlikely to have failed, same for the diodes.

          It is most likely the usual brush issue, if you dismantle the alternator and clean the brushes or
          you could try giving it a good dose of RP7 in the back of the alternator and it might come good.

          Also look for a couple of holes either side of the bearing on the back, these are provided on a lot of
          alternators to allow you to insert a rod to keep the bushes compressed when your assembling
          the alternator, try squirting RP7 into them too.

            Also! one thing i didn't know but do know now is that the 1KD & GRJ have different alternators!

            Below is the part numbers for both models and are both are 80amp for 2007 aussie model.

            1KD - ALT -------- 27060-30120
            pully ------------ 27415-30020
            REGULATOR -------- 27700-30090
            ALTERNATOR BRUSH - 27370-23120

            GRJ - ALT -------- 27060-31010
            pully ------------ 27411-31200
            REGULATOR -------- 27700-31040
