  • Combustion louder when cold

    Hi all,

    We've had our 150 since 12/2012 and have just passed 10000 klms. Since new I have noticed injection/combustion is louder when it is cold. I haven't driven another prado is this the same for everyone else's here? It doesn't quieten down until the temperature is up to operating temp.

    Mine has done this since new also and is much more noticable in colder ambient temps i.e. in winter. I don't believe this is the same issue as the dreaded "death rattle" but maybe Roo or one of the other diesel mechanics can explain what causes it.

        Thanks for the replies,

        I don't like the noise so I take it very easy for the first few blocks, and have also started starting it up 5 minutes early to let it warm up. It doesn't knock until about 1/5th throttle but it's hard to get the car moving with any less throttle.

        Don't think my wife can hear it as she has the radio turned up.

        On a side note I heard a d4d van start up cold the other day and it sounded very knocky.

          We had two work prados of the same manufacture date. Both GXs and only one started did this shocking rattle on start up and lasted for about 5-10 minutes. The local dealer said it was just the cold ambient air temp. We get down to minus during winter. Anyway with one doing it and the other not, it was the perfect way to say bullshit, there is a problem here. Still no joy with the local dealer, so we took it to a larger dealer and straight away they found out the ECU was stuffed and the mapping was causing the rattles by way injection and engine management. Replaced the ECU and behold, two identical prados again.
          Had a 2006 GXL, liked it so much bought a 2008 GXL. Liked the 150 so I bought a black 2010 GXL. Liked them even more and bought 12/2012 GXL. Must like Prado

            It is impossible to diagnose whether it is the death rattle or just noisy. Where are you? Put your location in your profile and someone might be able to offer a second opinion. I know I was a bit paranoid about my 120 and had the injector feedback values checked a couple of times. The first time the Service Manager walked me over to a couple of 120s and 150s. Mine was noisier than some and quieter than others. The noisiest by far was a new 150 going through pre delivery. If you are concerned insist that the dealer checks injector feedback values and tells you what these are. I think (and hope) that the days of the problematic injectors and seals are behind us and limited to the early 120s but that may be wishful thinking. There are a few threads about the death rattle and preventative measures in the 120 and 150 diesel sections. Worth a read. Essentially clean fuel is your friend and get the injector feedback values checked each 40k when the valve clearances are checked OR if you are worried OR have symptoms. For the record my 120 had early injectors and two were outside spec at 130k. Thankfully replaced under extended warranty with the latest injector. But my 120 had no death rattle, rough idle, smokey exhaust or ant of the recognised symptoms.
