If it's a diesel then it's normal turbo noise

Hi Tamey. I've not long picked up our Prado Altitude Turbo Diesel auto. It's our 4th Prado Diesel, 3rd D4D. In comparison to our recently sold 2010 150 series GXL Turbo Diesel auto, the 2013 Altitude has a very audible turbo whistle. Even after fitting a snorkel, the turbo whine is very loud, especially between 2000 to 2800 rpm. I'm going to mention it to Bill Robbo Toyota at the 10000km service...if nothing goes wrong in the meantime. Not that I'm expecting there to be any issues....they are a bloody great truck. If there is a better all-around 4X4, it hasn't been made yet

Must be the weather in Gladstone! The 150 seems to have more whistle than the 120 we had before it though I wouldn't have said it was annoying. Do you have the 1500rpm drone?

G'day mjrandom. No 1500rpm drone. I took the old 150 series GXL for a drive just the other weekend (my parents bought it from me) just to see if I was overdramatising the turbo whistle....but I'm not. The 2013 Altitude definitely has a loud turbo compared to the 2010 GXL....same motor and gearbox.... so I don't get it???

Maybe the turbo is out of a different factory?

              Hey Gav!

Mine too has a bit of audible noise through the Snorkel - Nothing in comparison to the ute though....

Next time you're up feel free to take mine as another comparison. Maybe the turbo is just working harder on the new truck due to all the extra fruit on the Altitude

Mrs drove off this afternoon in the 150 while I was knees down in the Rodeo and you can definitely hear the turbo whistle as it winds up and I can't recall that with the 120. Maybe it is one of those mid spec changes.

Wouldn't have any thing to do with inter cooler being in the front of the 150 compared to the 120 being on top ??? Cheers Steve

                        ignore this

Took my 2007 P120 D4D up to the club property for its first off-road workout last weekend. Nothing too serious but a few slow climbs for a couple hours. All good...except that just as we got back to the hut, I noticed a clicking noise coming from the front, bit like sticking something in a high speed fan... It wasn't continuous, but only after revving to around 2.5k. I figured I might have picked up a stick on the last descent but realised that the sound stopped on idle. Got to a level patch and lifted the lid. Then partner revved to 2-3k and it started and was definitely very loud. Thought it was coming from the belt or cooling fan...but after revving again, it was definitely coming from the intercooler located on top of the donk. It made the noise only a couple of times and now I can't get it to do it. I placed the vehicle into Low Range/ Diff Lock, Neutral, High Range Diff Lock, each time revving to 2-3k to no avail...

Now I'm sure that my fuel consumption is crap and wonder if the turbo charger is actually working or not? It is expensive to get the turbo 'serviced'?

Could it be the compressor bearing or something?

+++ ignore this post. I searched the forum for info on turbo noise, saw this thread and posted...only now realising I was in the P150 space...+++
