  • Anyone got a uni filter on there Diesel

    I have recently bought a new KDJ150R, which I am very happy with.
    After selling my old HDJ80 Landcruiser.

    On my 80 series I had a uni filter, which improved my engine performance.
    I would like to know if anyone has a uni filter on there diesel prado?

    If so how does it perform, and what is the part number for it?

    Also would a uni filter cause any problems with the air flow meter sensor, or anything else.

      I used to have one on my 120, but got sick of having to clean and reoil it all the time so went back to the Toyota one. I don't think it made any noticeable difference to the performance.
      Can't we just keep travelling?

        The toyota ones are better. Maintain there performance. Ones that need to be oiled IMO are for rally cars and off road buggies swapped at service points.

          I used a filter sock on my Birdsville trip and still got fine red dust past the sock. The oiled foam stops a lot but not everything. Nothing got past the genuine filter. The filter elements may be a bit better as I believe they use two different sizes of foam in series.

          I recon you're better off carrying either genuine or aftermarked spares. The factory filter can be hosed off with tap pressure. The problem with this is they take ages to dry unless you have access to low pressure, high volume compressed air. Aftermarked spares are dirt cheap ($18-20) for Wesfil so not a burden to change them ever 2000km offroad if needed.

            I just found on my old 80 series with the double banded foam uni filter, it stopped any signs of dust entering the intake pipe.
            As when I used a paper filters, fine dust managed to get through the filter into the intake pipe.

            The sock filters are a course foam (like the outer band on the uni filter), but the inner foam band is quite fine.
            I know the uni filters are a pain to clean, just I think they offer better air filtering.

            Interested in the views.

              I use a k&n in my old 300k+ 1kz still going strong!

                Running a K&N on the tar and a Unifilter on the dirt. Also I throw on a Unifilter snorkel sock when I'm on the tracks and it's particularly dusty. No issues, zero dust entry into the engine. Guess I'm just fussy about dust entry into my engine..

                  I bought a uni filter combo pack a few weeks ago, for my Prado and fitted it yesterday.
                  I was just about to install the filter when I noticed it had been put together wrong.

                  The metal mesh was on the underneath (dirty side of air filter box). Then the foams were at the top of the air filter box.
                  This could have caused the engine to suck the foams into the turbo if fitted this way around!

                  So had to strip the uni filter and put the metal mesh to the top, and then install the green & ribbed yellow foams to the bottom of the filter.
                  The mesh stops the foam from being sucked into the intake pipe and turbo.

                  Well worth checking before you fit a new one. As you would expect it to have been put together correctly from the factory.
                  You could easily get caught out, and it could cause a lot of problems and damage.

                    I'm with you. I proved it on many outback trips to nay sayers. We open air boxes and do the old wipe test with a tissue. Paper filters of all brands always let varying amounts of fine dust through while my air box/intake fitted with a double layer, oiled foam filter is clean as a whistle. I'm now a 20 year user of them on every vehicle I've had. The secret to getting them right in in oiling them the correct amount.

                    Too many people read BS on the net and biased amateur testing results and run with it as gospel.

                    The only issues with foam filters are servicing them right (under or over oiling) and it's obviously a messy business (depending on how you do it), the flip side is they are super cost effective.

                    Under oiling obviously reduces the effectiveness. Over oiling restricts airflow and can contaminate Air Flow Meters.
                    On vehicles with MAF sensors I'd be suggesting you are anal about not over oiling and clean the sensor every service or less (5k kms) to ensure no oil contamination effecting it.

                        Fair enough to put that information out there. People need to be able to make informed decisions.

                        The article you linked is at least 5-6 years old and not originally form the Nissan page but from the Diesel Power page I think it was. It's also been cut/edited down to about half of it's original form in the link you provided.

                        The trouble for me is the guy was extremely biased to start with, even before the test he was trying to prove his opinion was right. When that's the case then the graphs and data can be slewed ether way to make your case, who'd know. I can write a word Pro oiled filter article with some graphs too and make some testing claims and voila, a counter argument and some people would believe me because it looks professional and its on the net so it must be true.

                        Being independent of any seller/manufacturer doesn't make the guy unbiased in his opinion.

                        If you and I got together and purchased 9 filters and one of us "donated" $153,000 dollars worth of testing on a $285,000 dollar testing machine I think there's a good chance there'd be more than a couple of graphs in the article/post we wrote IE: Where's the pictures??? I'm sure we'd have pic of the testing gear, the filters, screen shots or printouts of the results.

                        It's like me doing a dyno graph on Microsoft Excel for my "300kw 1KZTE", you wouldn't just believe that would you?, you'd want to see the Dyno dynamics software printout and pictures of the vehicle on the Dyno and even then there'd be doubters and fair enough. The point is I could make a very believable case if I wanted too.

                          Off road racing is in the harshest and dustiest conditions, so that makes them a more than suitable air filter for a 4x4.
                          Please note that the foam filters are only good, if they are maintained and serviced correctly.

                          If it is too much trouble for someone to maintain and service a foam filter, by all means stick with a paper air filter.
                          As these air filters require less maintenance, and offer an except-able standard of performance.

                          For me it is easy to change the foams when on a service or required, as I have an already oiled spare set of foams.
                          Then clean and re-oil the old foam after completing the service, and putting it in a zip lock bag when done.
                          Also like the idea of not having to buy air filters again.

                            Greasing the inside of your airbox helps too. Always did this on the dirt bikes and now the Prado. Will also tell you if there is dust getting through your filter setup what ever you use. This might be obvious to most but don't use engine oil on your filters. Worked at Honda (m'bikes) for over 13yrs and used to see it all the time. Too light a viscosity and flows to the bottom of the filter leaving the top dry.

                              Had a Uni Filter on my 2002 Turbo Diesel for over 2 years and had no problems whatsoever. Bought it because was sick of spending $70 for the Toyota original. Being as I was doing a lot of dirt road driving in northern WA wanted to cut out dust. No dust gets past yet you can clean it at the side of the road in no time. Make sure it is dry before applying new oil. Good value in my opinion and no loss of power. Tip: Toyota will not clean them during a service and as I found out won't tell you that either, so check filter after every service done by others.
