  • Black smoke / soot - cold & hot

GX 150. On startup a little black soot expels, again each time on acceleration while stationary (before warm up) and then after running for half an hour, when stationary and depressing the accelaerator more black soot out the exhaust.

Presuming this could be as a result of many different things, from minor to near catastrophic? One website I just googled lists the following potential options:

    Incorrect timing
    Dirty or worn injectors
    Over-fuelling
Faulty turbocharger (ie not enough air to match the fuel)
    Incorrect valve clearance
    Incorrect air/fuel ratio
Low cylinder compression (eg sticking piston rings or worn components)
    Dirty air cleaner
Restricted induction system (eg system too small or kinked inlet piping)
    Other engine tune factors
    Poor quality fuel
Excessive carbon build up in combustion and exhaust spaces
    Cool operating temperatures

Where do i start? Just a decarbonizer as they try to sell you? Should i be rushing straight to the mechanic?

AS always appreciate the useful feedback found around here. If i'm asking something with an obvious answer elsewhere on the forum happy to be directed (and apologies in advance).

    Cheers

How old, how many km? I would think dirty air cleaner perhaps assuming this is more smoke than is usual for a D4D.

Also have you tried cleaning your MAF sensor?, but it's quite normal for some soot to end up on the ground, happens with both my prado and my misuses Hyundai i30 wagon

Yeah Ghost not yet. Just had a look though and the wire sensors are pretty contaminated...could be onto something here! Will get some of that CRC spray perhaps? Seems the best by the looks unless something generic would actually be ok> open to suggestions MAF new to me. Will report back. Here's hoping it's nothing more serious

A clean of the MAF sensers with some CRC spray appears to have had a positive effect. Reduced if not resolved. Could be some residuals. Thanks for the simple but effective answer there. AS I said none of my prev vehicles have had MAF's.. show's how old school i somehow managed to be until now

Hey sorry for not getting beck to you about the type of cleaner etc. was playing with the car all day. I've got the crc MAF sensor spray but any contact cleaner that's doesn't leave a residue will be ok. That is great news about the effects so far tho. let's hope it's all fixed then, yea it's nice when things can possibly be fixed for a whole lot cheaper than first thought. It may take a good run to sort it all out. Glad to help and another reason why this forum is worth it's weight.

                  Cheers

                  Craig

When you say you cleaned the MAF, what kind of crc spray did you use?

Yeah Craig, most appreciated. And I cannot fault prado point as a newcomer to prados and common rail diesel in general! Weight..in gold indeed

Yeah the crc spray was 20 bucks or so, and if you believe their dogma on their promos/ads online it's 'the only thing specifically designed for MAF sensors'. Anyway did a good job on mine is all i care about!

Going for a few hundred km's on the weekend so should see it right (or otherwise!). Any issues i'll repor tin i guess.

                        Cheers

Yea, I love my prado, and the common rails a great when they are going great, but can be temperamental if you get unlucky. Yea I try and make sure to give my MAF sensor a clean every 5,000k might be overkill but really for $20 a can it lasts a long time and it's better to have clean sensors than not in my view. Hopefully it's all smooth sailing now.

                            Cheers
