  • Turbo failure question....

Does anyone have reliable/accurate information on how long I should expect to get from the Turbo before replacement?

We have a 150 series Prado (2010) which is no longer under warranty. Has 130,000kms on the clock. Serviced every 5,000kms, well maintained. A whistling/siren like sound began a couple weeks ago and we have taken it to both the Toyota dealer and an independant diesel mechanic and both reports suggest the turbo requires replacement.

I am trying to get this replaced by Toyota as I wouldnt have expected to have to fork out almost $5,000 to replace a Turbo this soon, however I know they will argue it has not been serviced by Toyota on a regular basis (it has been serviced by reputable mechanics and self-serviced for oil and fuel filter etc) and they can not guarantee the work completed on it in the past hasnt contributed to the turbo failure and yadda yadda yadda.....

Am I right to stick this out or should we just suck it up and replace at our own cost?

    Thanks for your help!

Irrespective to it being either the 120-D4D or a 150-D4D those turbo's are near bullet proof and not a common item to die.

    "Hypothetically!"

Even if you had used "crapy" engine oil (Hard thing to do these days with these modern oils) then the worst scenario would be a prematurely worn compressor bearing and obviously seals which in turn would cause your turbo to both leak oil & burn oil!

Side note: Diesels have to use diesel engine specific oil due to anti-clogging detergents and low soot etc but practically all oils these days are turbo friendly.

From what that you have described it sounds like that the turbine impeller has chipped or cracked... Hence the "whistling/siren" noise.

My next question is have you done anything to your EGR system? ... EG: Blocked or restricted it?

It would probably (More than likely) be much cheaper to get your reputable mechanic as appose to Toyota to do the job for you given that you have no warranty.

Click link below as this is same part numbers for your rig.

        Thanks for the responses.

Skywalkerrun- thanks for the info. We have done nothing to the EGR system, despite having advice we should bypass it, which we did not do. We have always used good oil and filters, probably better than what Toyota put in there themselves.

We have since been quoted between $1500 and $3300 to have the issue repaired, 2 quotes from turbo specialists which are at the lower end of that pricing scale and will recondition (put in a new core providsing thats all that is required) or replace. If Toyota do not come to the party its likely we will decide on one of these options.

        Thanks again for the feedback.

Just so you know it is up to Toyota to prove that possible incorrect servicing has caused the damage , not the other way around so don't let them pull that stunt , that is simply the law now

If it's out of warranty, they don't have to prove anything, you'd have to seek goodwill from Toyota?

Yeah it would be goodwill but if you produce service history it doesnt matter who did it as long as its done, the product has to last a resonable time ,
I do the goodwill claims where I work
