  • 40k service. Injector seals or not

    Hi all
I have to decide if I should do the seals at 40k.
The clearances need checking anyway but do I go all the way while I'm there ?
There is some inconsistent theories that early 2010 150's have the old type seal.

What has everyone decided to do ?

I don't take my car to the dealer and never will.

Also interested in the feedback to 'Pradodiesel's question. I have Oct 2010 with 44k on the clock and never missed a '6 month service'. Toyota has never asked for the vehicle to stay over night so I guess they are still to do the clearance check. I would like the seals replaced when it's eventually being checked. What does the valves cost?

I would suggest at 40k the valve clearances are fine.
      The seals likely ok too.
Why open up & risk debris getting to your fuel system & injectors with such a young vehicle?

Stick with oil changes every 5k & all the other CRD specific, non TOYOTA dealer service recommendations & checks.
Eg; check oil pick up screen & feedback values every 10k.
2010's with only 40k on the clock? They need to be driven more, take some holidays.

If you insist on opening it up to check something which will be ok, then yes, it's 10 more minutes to pull the injectors & change the seals & o-rings.
But then if your going to pull them, because they are 4 years old & not DLC on every moving part like baileys blueprinted injectors, I would upgrade to the best, then you can relax & drive.

My valves were all well within spec and that was at 181,000k's so i think they will be fine at 40k. If doing it then yes, change the seats/sheets might as well as you have the stuff off anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. I will leave it as it. Was just a bit concerned following some comments that I have the 'old' seals.
As for the low mileage... by taking the bus to work most days, Moreton and Stradbroke just around the corner and Fraser up the street, it is difficult to put on a log of mileage ! Thanks all !

            Thanks for the feed back

I won't make it worse by saying my Prado is a 2010 and has only 33k on the clock. Just wanted to know with 40k coming up in a year or so. Lol

To be honest the car is only used solely for off road trips so the 33k is mostly off road. We have other cars for the daily grind.
It's never been to the shops.

            Yes it's a waste but I can.

It takes 10 seconds to look up into the sump plug hole to check for lumps of residue on the screen to the oil pick-up which is a strong indicator as to the failure of the injector seals. Likewise a Techstream or other OBD2 device to check injector feedback values to ensure they are within spec. No need to go pulling things apart unnecessarily.

                Good advice, thanks

Will keep an eye on the oil pick up and keep changing the oil every 5k.

                Cheers

I often see this theory when people are talking about injectors and that you should change your oil every 5k, like that is some how going to make the any difference to injector life! The injectors wear internally, there is no engine oil that's gets in there.

Its hard to argue that changing your oil more often is a bad thing because its not, but whether its a worthwhile thing is another story. Can anyone point to a single incidence where keeping with the standard 10k oil change in a Prado has led to an issue?

Even if you do the change yourself what you spend on oil and filters over a 100 thousand will pay for a new set of injectors, if you take it to a mechanic for the oil changes it will probably cost you as much or more than the cost of getting a set of injectors supplied and fitted.

Personally I haven't seen anything to suggest there is any real advantage in over servicing when it comes to oil changes on these engines.

                  Cheers Andrew

You put in your new oil and the very next day it is as black as and has the same consistency as the oil that you pulled out after 10,000km.

Argh so something you don't know.
I don't think I've ever read anything where someone is inferring extra oil changes will help injectors.
The idea is check your oil pick up screen every 5000klms, you know for blow by? You know the blocked oil pick up thing?
Hey you know it will probably be ok.
BUT, there are plenty of failed engines, due to the blocked oil pick up, surely you have read about that?
@ 5000 k intervals you have a very good chance of catching it before it puts a rod out the side of the block.

                      Like this one.

Have you seen this before? This is a leaking seal, sheet, seat whatever, run vehicle like this & you have maybe a few thousand Klm's not 10,000klms till catastrophic failure! Don't talk people out of it, that could be a mistake like telling someone it's ok to drive like that. You could be lucky, but like another time, they didn't make it did they?

I would suggest oil change at 5k, no oil filter, good Penrite oil will cost $60 for the 7 odd litres you need, x 10 over 100,000klms is only $600 far from paying for injectors!!!!!

A new motor is what you need to budget for!!!, not injectors.

Andrew, I thought you had a better understanding of the situation, anybody else not understanding the importance, please speak up.

Yeah I have a very good understanding of the situation do you? Earlier in this very thread you suggested checking the screen every 10 thousand K, now all of a sudden if you don't do it every 5k you will blow your engine up!

Apart from that why would you spend all that money to check to see if you have an issue and not just spend that money to make sure you don't have an issue in the first place by changing the seals to the coated type?

And apart from that, they changed the seals towards the end of the 120 model, I haven't seen any credible reports of the old seals being in a 150, think about it, Toyota changed the design then found an old box of seals down the back of the storeroom and thought they would use them up in the 150 series, give me a break!

Particularly in the context of this thread where the OP was specifically asking if he needed to change the seals when he has already done 90% of the work and spent 99% of the money needed to change the seals, you tell him not to worry about it but keep changing the oil every 5k so he can check to see if he needs to do all that work again in order to change them.................. Maybe I am the one who is stupid but I just don't get it!

                        Cheers Andrew

You just didn't decipher my illiteracy correctly.
Try reading it a few times & then try it backwards.

So the coated seals are ok? We don't need to check up on them? Ok I see.

I believe they changed them not so late on the 120's in fact late 2007, 2 years before it ended.
Closer to the start of 120 with 1kd.

Yes that's right I believe, at 40k it will be ok, but still do the checks, my pet read & understood that.
You said it not me :-)
