  • CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

    Mates

I have my car since new (20K currently) , dealer maintained , runs on 98 Octaine Fuel since new

Recently I have been hearing a background sound when the engine is running and the car is idle it is like a low (chk chk chk chk) ticking constantly and increases with the car revs

I might sound paranoid, I've checked with my friends'prados and it is almost the same , does this sounds familiar to you guys or is it a sign of a valve calling for readjustment or possibly sparks calling for ill feed of electricity

The Rig is working fine as , but am trying to be cautious here

    Please advice

    Cheers

It is a known fault with the V6, the noise is from the manifold and Toyota in Aust dont have any issue with it. It is an annoying sound for such a good motor

I've got an 03 V6 that's sounds like it's got a permanent hole in a manifold gasket. I've had it checked over several times and the local dealer now reckons I'm just a pain in the arse.

Sound proofing in the cab is great. Wind up the windows and the sound goes away

It's listed elsewhere in this forum that it's a known issue with the ancient exhaust manifold design - but I certainly thought Toyota would have addressed it in the newer models.

I've been experiencing a ticking noise also, I've tracked it down the the exhaust side cam valve lifter on the right hand side using a stethoscope. I don't have the standard exhaust manifolds so my noise isn't coming from there.

I haven't bought it to Toyota's attention yet, my vehicle is with them at the moment getting the rear diff fixed - I didn't bother them by complicating the issue.

How many people with this noise have traced it with something like a stethoscope?

            Doc Chippy says ...

I'm using the $4.95 el cheapo Screwdriver stethoscope (bushy style).

It works - and I don't need a lab coat to use it

I've got so many "Trust me, I'm a Doctor" jokes going through my head.

It's good to lighten things up a bit, it's been one of those weeks for other reasons too.

hey guys , im glad i seen this , i have no experience with v6 engines at all ... being from N Ireland we drive 1.6L cars (average) , i went from a WRX to this Prado and was hearing this ticking noise , i was thinking was it MY ENGINE only , i even considered driving to a toyota dealer in the Sub and test driving a V6 prado to compare

yet again this forum comes through

Re: CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

                  G'day everyone,

I just got myself an 05 V6 auto a week ago, and have done about 400km since I got it. I just noticed a fair bit of engine noise start up on the passenger side, I can't tell if it's the manifold or the head, but if I stick my ear on the manifold cover, it's clearly much louder on the passenger side (sorry, don't have a long enough screwdriver to track the noise further).

The plugs were just replaced at the 80K service, so I'm wondering if I'm hearing valve noise, or are the injectors playing up ???

Is one more likely than the other ?

I can also feel it roughen a little every now and then when it's idling.

                  Any ideas ??

                  Thanks everyone !

Re: CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

                    Hi all,

Just got to say first that I love Pradopoint. Had heaps of thoughts, feelings and question when I brought my new Prado and I was glad to see most of them have been addressed in Pradopoint.

I think the CHK, CHK sound is what I am hearing. For me it is really only noticeable during heavy'ish acceleration. I thought it was a leak in the exhaust manifold on the passengers side. The engine does feel a little rough sometimes too. The car is going in for its 1000 km service this week, so I will mention it then.

Good engine so far, but I am disappointed at this noise. My '91 V6 4Runner ran quieter than this. But if it isn't a problem, then I can handle a little noise.

Re: CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

                      Hey 09PradoGXL !

I'll be really interested to hear what the mechanics say about the noise, I also posted about this noise on the 'My new Tractor' thread.

My mechanic thought it might be lifter (lash adjustor) noise, but according to everything I have read on PradoPoint (and apparently also the official explanation from toyota), it appears to be manifold noise, and according to a few blokes who fitted extractors, the noise went away. ...although I have heard that in the old 4runners, that this noise got worse with extractors on !!

...though you are the first one to say the noise is also on the passenger side, I'd really like to hear from other PP members if their manifold noise is also louder on the passenger side ??

Best to do what Matt tells me, wind up the window and get on with driving and having fun with an awesome 4wd !

Look forward to hearin how you go !

Re: CHK CHK Sounds in the engine

                        Hi Whitey

When I mentioned it to Toyota service they said that that the noise was common in that engine. They didn't say where it was coming from though, and I didn't get a chance to chat much when I picked up the car. They did say, and not in these exact words, that the complaint was registered along with everyone else, that way Toyota can assess whether the problem needs addressing.

The guys at Melville Toyota are pretty good, and I need to go back again sometime this week, so I will ask them and see what they say.
