  • Wheel Nut Torque Setting?

Rotated the tyres today for the first time, the old fashioned way no rattle gun used. The owner's manual says wheel nuts to be torqued to 83 ft.lbf, so I tightened as prescribed. This seems low to me, thoughts...

Re: How tight are your nuts?

this is close to the mark.
i normally do toyota wheel nuts to 100nM.
this is critical on some toyotas.
if you over tighten you actually flex the hub and get brake shudder.
not good, so do to the handbook.
    you'll be spot on

Re: How tight are your nuts?

If the lug nuts are over tightened, then there's a possibility that the studs get stretched to the point where they lose their elasticity. Once the studs get stretched, no matter how tight you tighten the nuts, exposed to vibrations over time, they will just work themselves loose.

Ask any Patrol owner and they can probably concur.

Re: How tight are your nuts?

This was really driven home to me over the weekend. I was about to rotate the front tyres/spare on the Clubbie when I noticed a missing nut on the driver's side. :!:

Given the way I drive the thing I need all the support I can get. Either some low life wanted a set of 19s for his Commode and was thwarted by the anti theft nut or the dealer who recently replaced rotors and pads didn't do the nuts up properly.

As the other 4 on that wheel were barely hand tight I know which I favour though no doubt the service agent will assure me of their QA procedures and work ethics.

So in answer to your question blkmav90 mine are now far more relaxed now compared to when I first saw the un-nutted stud.

Re: How tight are your nuts?

I once had a HZ holden 253, and one night from the gym I noticed like a pinging sound coming from the front right. Stopped the car and  3 x nuts sheered off the hub along with stud, so only 2 x nuts holding the bloody thing on. Needless to say , I dropped the car off at a mates house who I bought it off only a week prior with a note saying "Fix this ya goose". All good, job fixed new studs very happy, then about a week and a half later, on my way to Stirling that dreaded ping came back  , stopped the car....... double  this time no nuts !!!!! :| So I parked it up, got it towed to my Aunty's place in Kwinana, had to sail the next day so we just chocked under the axle, and left it there for 3 x months whilst I was at sea. Car got broken into needless to say by some local morons and the buggas couldnt start it !!!! DAMNIT! I wanted it written off so I could claim hahahahaha..... oh well.... turns out something was warped either front hub or wheel, so I traded back to my mate to fix up and sell and got a dunnydore instead hahaha... dreaded ping

Learn a new thing everyday, I was getting the brake shudder and after reading this ,I retighten all my nuts  and I noticed a different straight away, the brake shudder was hardly noticable and after about 500kms it non existance .

Thanks damonat this just save me from re-doing my brakes and with the money saved I can now look at what else I can do on the Prado.

I can't remember. It's in the Manual, I think under the replacing a flat tyre section.

Let me know if you want me to look it up for ya.

I have s/h 120 series with three different alloy wheels (among 5), and two different kinds of wheel nuts: tapered and with flat washer. I now see that the tapered nuts are not on the wheel with tapered holes and the guy who serviced it pointed out that the washered nuts were on the one wheel with tapered holes. Not good fit at all. The variety on one vehicle (even on one type) is puzzling.
How important is it to match nuts with holes in wheel rims?

Have been using 85 ft.lbf for 33 years and also use never seize on nuts, tapers and the washers on the mags. Have never had one come loose or had any stud failures.
The stud elongates to an elastic amount when the correct torque is applied. If the stud has no lubricant it will grab and not provide the correct amount of force to keep the wheel on the hub. Over tightening the nut will elongate the stud past its elastic limit and this will cause failure. Think of an elastic band, if stretched a little way will return to original size, when over stretched will break or not return to original size. Other than the friction of the bolt it is the elongation of the stud that keeps the wheel nut from unwinding.
Image that I remembered this from my apprenticeship training ( fitter and turner) in the early 80's. even surprised myself.

I use a proper torque wrench on mine and it is set at 100nm. I searched my books high and low coming up with nothing. Phones all the Tpupta dealers within 100k's and not one of them had a clue! So I rang around all the local tyre shops and they all said 100nm so that's what I do, and it seems to be working pretty good!
