  • Can I fit 265/70 R17 to unmodified 120 series

I've scoured through the various posts and although there is some information re changing from the original 265/65 R17 to 265/70 R17, it always seems to be in conjunction with some other modification to the suspension (perhaps I'm just not looking in the right spot !!).
    So my questions are:

    1) Can I fit 265/70 R17 to an unmodified suspension without causing any issues like rubbing etc...
    2) Are there any legal issues (in WA)

As a side note, I'm looking at the Pirelli Scorpion ATR - in LT if they exist.

    Thanks for you help

Hi - Thanks for the reply - this doesn't seem like it would be a problem too much of the time (wheel not often at full lock), but just to be sure, do you know if you can get the guard adjusted??

I know a few people that run that size on a 120 with stock suspension - no problems that I know of..

You will also need a mod to the tyre carrier to space the tyre off the rear door. Otherwise, the tyre will rub against the paintwork.

I have had 265/70's (BFGs) since I have had my 2005 GXL (2 1/2 yrs). It has unmodified stock suspension. I have no problem with rubbing except perhaps at full lock, but even then only just. You will need spacers on the rear wheel to stop rubbing. This is what I have on my vehicle to stop rubbing:

I had bought the Pado with 265/70R17 tyres already on it, and found that the previous owner (or Toyota, I don't know who) had put the 5 round rubber patches evenly spaced around the door under the black plastic protector. It had prevented any rubbing of the paintwork on the door. I can assure you that all you see on the door in the photo is dirt (Birdsville, Oodnadatta & Flinders ranges dirt).

Re: Can I fit 265/70 R17 to unmodified 120 series

When I bought my rig new from Newtown Toyota I had BFG 265/70 R17 fitted by them prior to delivery. No rubbing whatsoever and no problems.

I've since fitted the 50mm lift and still no issues.

Side issue: as I have posted previously the 70 series make the speedo 100% spot on whereas the 65 series cause a speedo error of around 5 - 6km/hr. That is, your speedo tells you you are going 110 when in reality you are only doing 105 with the 65 profile tyres.

I've confirmed this with Decatur mobile radar, Ultralyte hand held laser and GPS. All read the same as speedo now.

Oh yeah, forgot that the rear spare wheel needs to be spaced. There's heaps of different ideas on how to fix this. I used 3 longer h/t bolts and some 20mm flat bar welded to the outside of the carrier.

The dealer used some longer bolts and 3 wheel nuts to achieve the spacing. I wasn't happy about the job because I couldn't get the bloody spare off as one of the bolts just keep rotating.

                  Hi Guys

Thanks for all of your replies. I had a look at the thread suggested by Mal, and quite like the sound of the modified nylon chopping board that 'Chippy' fitted. That was back in 2008. Does anyone know if he has had any problems with that mod, or if it is still working well??

                  Cheers - OAH

Just read the comments re the speedo - I agree with your figures. It will be a bonus to have the speedo accurate !!!!!!!!

                        265/65R17 to 265/70R17?

Basically just want to know if my stock standard '07 Prado VX will be able to fit the larger 265/70R17 without any issues or rubbing??
                        Thanks

Yes they will fit. You may get marginal rubbing at the extremes of turn if your alignment is not perfect. In Aus they are not strictly legal. but many fit them.

They are legal in some states, QLD and Vic come to mind, maybe others. Hopefully other states follow their lead and bring in the NCOP

Legal issues don't bother me as I live in NZ and its not a big deal.
Just wanted to know if there are any issues and if they rub, because don't plan on doing any suspension mods for a year or so yet.
                              Thanks
