  • Mickey Thompson STZ

Anyone here bought these recent arrivals? (only out since beginning of March)...
I'm interested to see how they perform on road: noise / grip / cornering / wet / dry conditions

    Thanks in advance...

    Rob,
    Rob.

They look like they might fit somewhere in between the ATZ 5 rib and ATZ 4 Rib. The lugs look a lot closer than the ATZ 4. Found it interesting that there is nothing on the MT sites both for here and in the US. Did find they come in standard size to suit the Prado 265/65R17 or 275/70R17

Kendog in Brisvegas might have some comments since he commented on getting a set (don't you just love Google)
$800 for 4 tyres is it possible ?

            I got a quote of $360 at Fourby's Tyres, Ipswich Rd...(Brisbane)

I'm interested to see how they track on bitumen, since they don't have a central unbroken "rib" - the rib is used by many manufacturers to help with straight line stability.

              Rob
New tyres are now due also, so I stuck my head in to Fourby's to look at theses tyres and they certainly look the part... Apparently made in the Coopers factory? I was told by the salesman however they are not afforded the same warranty as yet. Dont know if this is correct as I downloaded the full MT Catalogue and it states that "All Mickey Thompson products are warrantied for the life of the product to be free of manufacturers defects" Unsure really what that means compared to other products on the market??
I have been asking around about them and a couple of dealers do air their concern about the strength of the side walls compared tp say a Bridgy... I'm keen also to know how they perform in the wet as the missus will be driving the car during the weeks and it has always been an important factor in the product I purchase. Have you or anyone else managed to find out any more info/feedback?

Coopers also own Mickey Thompson, Dick Cepek and ProComp brands and all manufactured in the same factories

                  Re: Mickey Thompson STZ

I've been ringing around comparing quotes for different brands the last few weeks to get a new set before Easter. I was thinking of going the Cooper ST's and then came across this thread on the Mickey Thomsons STZ and an other thread mentioning the ATZ 4 Ribs. BFG's are not available anywhere for another 2 months anyway

Best quotes and advice has so far come from Guest 4WD in Fairfield Melb. They quoted Mickey Thompsons at $350 for STZ's in 275 65 R17 and $340 for ATZ 4-Rib in 265 70 R17 and Cooper ST in 265 70 R17 at $356. Availability is good. 1 weeks notice needed.

The dealer said he had the 4 Ribs on his rig and reckons they've been good and quieter then ST's although he recons the ST's side bitters would be the choice up in the high country. I reckon the ST would be the most aggressive on the scale that I would consider as I can't really justify the compromises of a true mud terrain tyre.

He also said he couldn't give me any feedback on the just released STZ's which have a yet unproven reputation being so new. Not much difference in price between the 3, so the decision will be made when I walk in and take a closer look at the tyres in the shop.

Check the legallity in your state as well, in qld the STZ is the only legal tyre.

I have the Cooper St's and they have served me well. Expect next time I will ignore the long life issue and go STT's. Still recommend the St's though as they perform wll in sand, mud, road, and rock

                        Re: Mickey Thompson STZ

Thanks for the heads up. I would hate to be left out in the cold by my insurance company for exceeding tyre diameter rules! 265 70 R17 are 26.5mm larger diametre than the 265 65 r17 (originals) according to an online calculator. Manufacturer specs may vary a little.

A little research on the legality of tyre diameters in Victoria leaves me still unsure with some conflicting info linked to the VicRoads website.
They link to a document "VicRoads Vehicle Standards Information 8, Guide to Modifications for Motor Vehicles May 2003, Section 8, Wheel and Tyres, says " the overall diameter of any replacement tyre must not be more than 15mm greater ... blah blah blah  "

This document may or may be out of date / not been updated if Victorian law follows the newer Australian national standards. VicRoads also have a link to the Commonwealth's Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14 (VSB 14) National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (NCOP) SECTION LS
TYRES, RIMS, SUSPENSION AND STEERING VERSION 2.0 JANUARY 2011.It seems 4WD Passenger vehicles for Off-Road may have an over all diameter of no more than 50mm greater. That would be handy.

It also says you can do a 50mm"lift" as a basic modification not requiring certification. I don't no if there is a "combined restriction of diametre and lift. Any one want to tackle that one? In any event, I will check with the dealer prior to purchase.I would hope any decent tyre dealer would at least be aware of the relevant legalities in their State regarding tyre diameters.

Why they cant make the traffic websites easier to read is beyond me. I work with legislation every day and still have trouble finding the correct info

contemplating the same tyre in 275x70x17; the STZ looks great and the dealers talk the talk just wondering if the tyre can walk the talk. I'm a bit scepticle of its offroad ability - having had the FCII on an earlier model very reluctant to take a step back in aggresiveness....I heard well saw (barely any noise) a navara drive past today running the MT STZ; would love some real feadback before I make the purchase....

I went into the dealer and had a look at the ATZ 4Ribs and made the decision to go with them. They definately look the part - a touch more agressive offroad then the STZ and not as hard core or as noisey noisey as the MTZ's or the Cooper ST's.

So I booked myself in yesterday and I was pretty releaved I had finally made up my mind and would have some traction this Easter. I arrived this morning to find the dealer can't get hold of the 4 Ribs for at least another month.

Now I have to think some more. :? Bugger!
