  • Getting To GTG From Tasmania

Since the SEQ Crew have a thread about how they might plan on getting to the GTG I just thought it might be good to start one on how the crew from Tasmania might get to the GTG,

So as far as I know the following from Tasmania are attending- VKPrado, oh thats right that is me. Will add to the list when others confirm.

At this stage the plan was to head off three weeks before the start of the GTG to ensure enough time to get there. Have poured over the maps and have decided that we might just take the most direct route from Devonport to Melbourne. All other options were either to wet (snorkel would not be long enough or door seals good enough) or to expensive (ever priced to air freight a Prado and camper trailer?).

From Melbourne most likely two days to get to Adelaide area, then head north to meet in-laws, then into Flinders Ranges area.

The paln keeps evolving ever time we open the map, but still have plenty of time.

Seems like the best plan, considering how close you are to Devenport to start with Maybe those coming from further South will investigate the alternate routes

I actually had to look at a map to check where Perth Tasmania was, I have actually been there by the looks, don't remember a damn thing about it though.

Look forward to seeing you in SA, and maybe down south if we get to Tassie at Christmas like we hope to.

      Cheers Andrew

Hey Andrew. Perth is just a little town 18km from the centre of Launceston. If travelling from the north to the south of the state on the main road you have to go through it.

With just over 14 weeks till the Tassie crew heads off to the GTG I thought it was about time we had a team meeting to try and tidy up a few loose ends like which way are we going once we get to Melbourne.

I propose that we have a meeting either inside my house or my shed at a time that suits me. We need to define the route from Victoria to South Australia and once there the most scenic route to end up at Bendlby Ranges. The route from Tasmania to Victoria has already been set. It was decided to take the ferry.

Any assitance with getting my vehicle ready is welcomed. We can use my shed, my tools, and drink from my fridge.

We have to put of a good show and let those from the SEQ Group know we are in town. Going by the looks of it they are doing a lot of planning with imput from a lot of people. This might be their down fall, as the saying goes "to many cooks spoil the broth".

I feel that with just the one of us doing the planning it will be straight forward as no one else will be able to tell me where to go. Apart from SWMBO and the VMS.

Hi VK. Seems like you've got a lot on your hands, organising the whole TAS contingent etc. Try not to stress too much!

Now, seriously, when is the ferry landing in chilly Melbourne? This will govern best route to Bendleby etc. If you have a few days to do the trip, there is a lot to see. Let me know.

I suggest you keep the drinking down to a minimum. You don't want fights to break out and the whole trip get ruined because of some bad proposal getting up on the numbers.

Perhaps you need to form a comittee that can make recommendations to the group. You of copurse would have the final say as Chairman. I do note however that SWMBO and the VMS are two very unreliable adversairies to any decisions you may make.

Careful you don't get too stressed with trying to plan things by committee (fatally flawed from the beginning really), or you'll end up beside yourself...and then there will be two of you trying to make decisions. God knows where it would all end then!!

                    Keep up the good work...

                        Hey iantz
We will be landing on the mainland three weeks before the start of the GTG. We were always planning to go to S.A. at this time and it is a case of the GTG ending up at the same time we are there.
We are planning to spend a lot of our time touring around the Flinders Ranges so I am sure we will keep our selfs busy before having to make our way to the start of the 2012 GTG.

VK - Three whole weeks!!! The question is what CAN'T you do! With that time frame before needing to be in Orroroo you could do the great ocean road down to Marengo. Then buzz up to the grampians and spend a day or two there in camper trailer. From there, head over to Kingston in South Aus. Make you way up along the old coorong road towards the coorong. Follow the murray river for a few days up to Morgan. Plenty of river camp spots around the place. Head from Morgan to Burra Gorge. Free camping and nice little spot. Do Goyder's line up to Terowie. Nice gravel road drive which takes a day, and has plenty old site/building etc to see. From there, head over to Mt Remarkable for a few days and go for a hike and also go to Alligator Gorge. The kids will love walking through here. From here, make your way on up to William Creek and go see Lake Eyre whilst there's water in it. Then, take the oodnadatta track through Marree then down to lyndhurst. Spend a few days looking around the flinder ranges / blinman area. Head from there down to Wilpena Pound. Then, your not far from Orroroo for the start of the GTG!!!

Three weeks.... what can't you do...... Lucky bugger

Well I chaired a group meeting the other night for all those heading to the GTG from Tasmania. It was 100% attended by those going. All four of us (me, wife, kids X 2) looked at the maps and decided what/where we are going to go to get to the GTG.

The plan at this stage is to take the boat from Tasmania and once we arrive on the north island, drive to and spend the first night at Bordertown. The second night will be around/ in Adelaide somewhere (to be decided). We will then do a few day trips around the area to places like Hahndorf and Gumeracha (giant rocking horse).
We will then travle north to Gawler and Freeling (wife liked McCleods Daughters) so will spend a day looking around the area. Next on the list is either Quorn or Hawker to meet up with the in-laws and start looking up and around the Flinders Ranges (the original purpose of the trip). No real timeline for this part, just take it as it comes.
Then on our way back to get to the GTG will stop off and have a trip on the Pichi Richi train.
