  • Diff breathers

    Hi knowledge bank
I was looking at installing diff/gearbox breathers, i had a crawl around yesterday and couldn't see any evidence. Has anyone already done this?

        Yeah mate
Pretty simply job. Get some oil resistant rubber hose, cable ties and motor bike fuel filters.
Slip the hose over the existing fitting. Go the extra and put a cable tie on it to help seal it. A hose clamp is ok but very hard to get off when it all goes south. I ran the breathers up to the second battery tray and cable tied them in place. Regular checking is a good idea, just to make sure the hose haven't rubbed through.

        Have fun

One day I will work out how to post pics.

So on the 150 the transfer case breathers are separate and not tee'd together as they were on the 120s? A quick check on toyoDIY shows the front and rear as separate. What has everyone done? I note Matt that you only have one coming up for the manual gearbox and transfer case so did you join them all together? I spent the afternoon making up a bracket for 4 breathers and now find I need 5 including another 1/8" to 1/4" joiner unless I put them together and even then I don't have the requisite parts. 6 breathers if I run the fuel tank breather forwards as well. I think I will just run the 5 of them and be done with it and somehow use the bracket on the ute. Bugger! Might do the gearbox and front and rear diffs this weekend and wait until I get another couple of fittings for the second transfer case breather since I have no idea where I can get bits tomorrow...

          Any comments?

I did the breathers today. All up about the same as the 120. Actually that isn't quite true, I piked doing the gearbox and paid the 4wd place to do it because I just couldn't reach around the gearbox so they did it when the car was on the hoist.

These are the three that are tricky to get to:

I made a copy of the bracket from yesterday just a bit longer and with an extra hole. The bracket is some 50 x 50 x 3 aluminium angle with the bits that get in the way cut off. The breathers I chose are mini breathers for industrial gearboxes. I wanted something small and neat and these do the trick. They have a 1/4" BSP male thread and I drill a 14mm hole to mount them, a 1/4" female hosetail then screws onto the breather sandwiching the bracket to hold them in place. Very happy with how it looks.

I bought the standard 120 list of bits, some 1/4" fuel line, a few hose clamps and made up a 1/8" to 1/4" hosetail adapter as per Ben's (FlyNdrive) post here:

            http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...reathers/page2

The front differential breather is easy and is as simple as unclip from under the fuse box. Using brute force over ignorance pull the Toyota cap off and push a 1/4" hosetail adapter in and hose clamp that on. The Toyota hose is slightly larger than 1/4" so you need a clamp. From there I ran some fuel line to the breather on the far right as you look at the firewall.

Next was the rear (thinking I will leave the tricky ones until later) and I discovered that the breather (not that it really is) had been cross threaded in the diff housing. Not happy. I didn't realise until I struggled to get the Fuel Line Union Part # 90404-51026 (see Ben's post) to screw in. Anyway I jacked up the back and had a good look. The first couple of threads were cactus and from there it was all good. So I ran a die nut down the union and cut the thread smaller in diameter and managed to get it started and with some liquid sealant screwed it in properly. I will definately be asking for the rear diff oil to be changed at the next inspection. Again clamped some fuel line and leaving plenty of spare for flex ran the line to the front, cable tieing to the hand brake cable and fuel lines. This then was terminated on the 2nd breather.

I enlisted the assistance of #1 son or MJRandom Jnr as myminirocks calls him and #1 lying in the engine bay and me underneath we unclipped the three recalcitrant lines and they drop down beside the gearbox. The gearbox breather hose is again 1/4" ish so a hosetail joiner is all that is needed. I had one 1/8 - 1/4 adapter and fitted that. After much fuel consumption to the usual suspect vendors there was no way I could get the bits today to make another and was going to be somewhat rough and in the interim shove some bicycle brake line up inside both hoses and clamp that off until I could make up another proper 1/8 - 1/4 adaptor. However I spied a hosetail joiner in one of the bits boxes. I have no idea where it came from or even what it was (some form of check valve actually but from what I don't know, remove spring and ball and voila!) but it turned out to be a tight fit in the 1/8 and a good enough fit in the 1/4 so another couple of hose clamps and we were in business! I made the mistake of cable tieing all three hoses together and tried to then fit them back near the clips on the gearbox. This was ungood and resulted in much letting of blood on the heat shields and other sharp bastards that live in that area. Hoses back down and run separately. All good this time. Word of caution the two transfer case hoses clip onto the gearbox hose and the two clips are easily dislodged and not so easily reinstated so don't get to aggressive with the hoses (hear that #1?). Anyway we managed to get some cable ties in place and the three lines were run to the last of the breathers.

This is how it looks now, a little casual blood rubbed on the cable just to show I care.

I remember on the 120 that the clip for the gearbox was a full loop and you had to pull the hose back through it, at lease on the 150 the clips are the conventional type and you can lift the hoses up and out of the clip.

I spent about $140 all up but that includes buying enough bits to also do the Rodeo breathers which will have to wait for another day.

Excellent job with that bracket and mini breathers there Mj
                Very professional finish.

Where did you get the mini breathers from?

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

Miniature Gearbox Breathers 1/4" BSP, Code UC-S-680003 come in a pack of 4. Postage is heinous at $20 when the breathers are $14 (for 4) so I piggy backed an order for other bits. These don't have any filter medium as far as I can tell and are a simple tight vented plastic cap over a tube. Much like the Toyota ones except they flow in both directions. The whole point of having the breathers up here is that they are far enough away from water and dust wont make it down the lines anyway if it does get it. I was going to put model engine air filters on again but couldn't find what I was after.

Unfortunatley I probably need at least another one depending what Uncle Isuzu has done with the Rodeo. Couldn't find any breathers this afternoon (except rear diff) but I wasn't looking too hard either...

EDIT: just had a thought, I can use a 1/4" wad punch and chop out a cylinder of foam air filter medium and poke this up inside the breathers! Test tomorrow.

Yeah, I joined the transfer case and manual gearbox breather thru a tee piece and they breath thru a single breather.. And bloody hell... Wasn't that a fun little job

How many litres of blood did you leave on the heat shields? First blood for the build, had to happen I guess. So did you have two or three breathers to join up?

I did end up adding some foam to the breathers. I had some filter medium that is used to make air filters for brush cutters etc and punched some circular pieces out of that. You can get the filter sheet from any mower or small motor place. I took a photo to show the relative sizes of it all.

I didn't have the right sized wad punch so I made one up from a piece of 1/2" copper pipe. Just file a good chamfer on the end and it works fine.

The foam is about the ID of the 1/4" BSP fitting and it is sandwiched in by the breather.

I also noticed this thread yesterday:

                          http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...Diff-Breathers

Which also has some more info.

Try brassfit or IFS which are the same company and they have shops aus wide. They supply the same filters used by BRC diff breathers and look neat. They can also supply everything you need to do this job. Enjoy
