  • Towing a caravan in 6th gear (manual)

    First post on prado point!

I'm 4 days into driving around Australia towing a caravan fully loaded around 1800kg and about another 200kg in the car.

Reading the owners manual it says not to use 5th or 6th (manual) when towing. If I was to sit in 4th I'd be at around 3500 revs @ 100km/h. Doesn't feel right!

In 5th I'm at around 2500-2600 RPM and 6th I'm about 2000-2100. A little worried about sitting in 6th putting stress on the gearbox but it feels reasonably comfortable and economical on the flat and i shift it to 5th on any slight incline.

    Any tips or suggestions??

6th gear in your manual is an overdrive gear (less than 1:1 ratio), so is meant for economy during normal driving.

Toyota states in the book to not use 6th gear when towing heavy loads, for a good reason. You may cause damage to your vehicle (not immediately but it will happen over time) You want engine revs between 2,000 and 2,500.

Could use 6th gear down a long incline, but back to 5th after that.

And towing at 100 km/h with all that weight is safe? I would not tow at more than 80 to 90 km/h so long as it is flat. Therefore, probably 5th at the most.

they recommend 4th as it is a straight drive gear, where as 5th and 6th are off set in the gearbox, so there is less strain on the gears and bearings in the box if you use 4th.

hmmm have used 6th when flat and 5th when slightly up etc or headwind and done about 20,000k's towing a 2t tandem caravan and no issues for me. I just choose the gear the engine doesn't labor with and change up or down to suit the road, gradient or wind conditions. 201,000k on the beastie so far and alls good. Also still on original clutch too and brake pads (although they are now almost work out).
