  • Alternator Replacement (150 Prado)

Dec 2010 Diesel Prado. approx 180,000km.

Driving home, red "battery" symbol charge warning light comes on.
Starter battery voltage dropping, so switched the second auxiliary battery to link it to the start battery, and this allowed me to get home.
Charged both batteries overnight, and auto elec found that the alternator was U/S

Apparently this is not an uncommon failure as you get a few km on a prado. Anyone else had an alternator failure on the diesel 150 Prado?

Anyway, no genuine stock in the country (only ex Japan).
No exchange alternators easily available apparently.
Some new non-genuine alternators provide an option for a 100 amp or 130 amp alternators.

In the end, the only alternator that was readily available in a day or two was a new "OEX" brand alternator, part number DXA552 (which is 100amp alternator, and it comes with the alternato pulley fitted. (apparently some don't have an alternator pulley and you have to fit the old alternator pulley)

Of interest, I have kept the old alternator, and the alternator pulley has a clutch type system, and whilst it had not failed it is making a noise, and apparently they also can fail and some alternator manufacturers recommend changing the alternator clutch pulley at 100,000km.

Anyway, the cost was approx $700 for OEX alternator.

    Hopefully it will be ok.

Luckily the alternator didn't fail while on a trip outback ...phew.

Yes, we have had the dreaded alternator fail on us when we were up at the Cape last year. We had to swap batteries with the mates car every 2-3hrs until we got down to Mossman where we utilised our RACQ. The auto-electrican had replaced a few with a std aftermarket ALT that covers all Prados/Hiluxes from 2006 onwards. The ALT cost $350 and we were out of pocket about $465. It actually charges at a higher voltage than the OEM & didn't need to refit the Voltage Booster I had in there..... When we got home I phoned Toyota & they agreed to replace the ALT with a OEM one so I don't have any warranty issues.
Down side.... Is the charging voltage has been reduced, so I had to refit the Voltage Booster to get a decent charging voltage.....

Oh yeah, it was the clutch that failed and not the alternator on ours.... At least we now have a spare for the future trips....

Was just thinking about this for an outback trip we're planning. How long could you expect the car (diesel) to run without the alternator charging? Neither of the 2 vehicles have a 2nd battery. Could spell trouble.
Solar panels on the roof connected to battery while driving???

Mate, we only managed to get somewhere between 2>3hrs of drive time b4 having to change batteries over. Solar Panels won't cut it either as u need a large solar capacity just to break even. It will help in increasing the drive time but not by much.... We had turned everything off, that is no fridge; no A/C; no stereo, etc and I think the max we may have got is 3hrs tops..... Problem being that as the day goes on, u are eventually loosing out as it takes a good 8hrs+ to fully charge your battery and the other car doesn't charge your flat battery to it's full capacity in time b4 you're needing to swap batteries again...... As time went on, we just swapped them more frequently and this gave us a bit of a break by not draining the batteries down so far.....

That's terrible. I assume it's still under warranty?
Tell them to give you a car while they wait, or rip one out of a stock car to get you back on the road

That's exactly where ours failed - luckily we were able to get back to Mossman where a Auto Electrician replaced it with an Aftermarket one. It cost less to buy and install than the cost of just buying the factory ALT from Toyota at $750. It also charged at a higher voltage as well which was better.... Teh Auto-Elect said he's been using these aftermarket ALTS on all D4D Toyotas since 2006 w/o any problems.....

Sometimes it pays to go somewhere other than Toyota.....

Hi Rob macca an aftermarket ALT seems to be the popular vote, however when i suggested that to the dealer he replied that would void the new car warranty in the electrics in total, they have you by the grass huts !

Yeah, that's what they said to us as well..... So I got onto Toyota Australia when we got back and they agreed to replace my ALT with a OEM ALT and I've just kept the Aftermarket ALT as a spare..... Once the Vehicle is out of Warranty and if the ALT fails again, I will just refit the Aftermarket ALT again....

Just had the same experience , just wondering the failures are they related to the fact that most of us have dual batteries and running an engel over a long trip is to much for the standard unit. Any recommendations on the alternative options to maximise potential output capacity ?

Was it the ALT or the Clutch on the ALT ?? Mine was the Clutch on the ALT
